THE SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAY.
Chkistchorch, December 11, : A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on the Minister of Public Works this morning re the Railway Extension Commission. After hearing then, Mr Jnhnaton promised lo telegraph to the Premier to the effect that the Chamber of Commerce will be satisfied if the Railway Commiaiioners can report upon the line as far as Reefton or gome point as far west and to the south of Reef ton. If the Commission. is confined to report to no further west than Marina Valley the Clumber request that either the terms of the Commission be extended or a new commission he issued. Mr Johnston also promised to • recommend the enlargement of the sc"pe of the Commission, as requested by the Chamber, but could not pledge the Government without consulting bin colleagues. Another deputation was from the Industrial Assoeiaiion re tho railway tariff and tho West Coast. Railway, &ov To this tho Minister gave a promise to look into the matters referred to, but he could express no hope of further reductions in the tariff.
