110 Stand tnw season, tha Thoroughbred Horse Puriri. Bred by. Mr H. Redwood in 1873, and is by Towton (imported) from Waimea by Sir Hercules—Flora Mclyor by Emigrant—CornelLa (imported) by Grasshopper—Manto (imported), Towton (own brother to the Peer ana Marchioness) by Melbourne, from Cinizelli by Touchstone—Brocade by PantaloonBombasine. See New Zealand or English Stud Book for Towlon or Wairaoa's ances-. tors, . , Suoh is the breeding of a direct descendant of oneoj the most successful thoroughbred families of modern times. _ As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi,Harakeke, Totara, Renga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Kama Kama, and Puriri, old Waimea has indeed lefi an imperishable namo, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the.progeny of the old mare, and their, descendants. ■ The mention of Puriri's ancestors will re call to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Louglands, Papapa, Laccnfeed, Songster, Tarnburini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne—Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Progress, whose aire, Angler, is from Towton's. own sister, Marchioness, and whoso dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules, Claiming clip relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mentionThat Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Baces, also to Cossack, Buy Middleton, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, the latter so well-known in this district as a sire. That Waimoa's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of Tho Barb, and Yattendon, the latter for yearathe premier stallion of Australasia, who, in liifl turn, gave us Grand Flaneur, Chester, and scores of other notables, Towton's sister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishheok, Eosd of Denmark, Angler, and King of Clubs, the latter is now in the Middle Paik Stud, Canterbury. That the Pter, Towton's brother, is the sire of Itfanuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darabin. That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winner of the V.8.0, Handicap, for 3and4yeU olds, beating a good field. That Towtonis the sire of Korari,Tambourini, Buma Kama, Songster—aire of Hornby—Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiiti, dam of Iris. That tho Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St, Leger, subsequently running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in tho Bundoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and Biro of the Painter, Newminster, His l ordship, &c. lhat Puriri as a racehorse amonest our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winningtheDunediuDerby, beatingßribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebuiy, Dead Heat, and Spray, and to quote from the report " having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands down." Only Dead Heat would oppose him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter. As &n indox to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped as a four-yeai-old to carry the cmbing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877, 1£ miles, and then started «<• 0 fi\ 1 wliAti T/itvmlfifnn nrrpfl. fttllv hjlfl
at 2 to 1 when Tcmpleton, aged, only naa 9st3lbs allotted to hiin, Ariel, syrs, 9st Blb3, and Foul Play,-3yrs, oul} carried 6st 71bs. Add to Puriri's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and yericrinances, that he stands over 16 hands n ith proportionate substance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season—whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses.
