SHOCKING RAILWAY ACCIDENT NEAR MELBOURNE.
ONE MAN KILLED, MANY INJURED, MELBOURNE. December 2, 7 55 p.m. ' Received December 3,11 a.m. A shocking railway accident occurred at 6,30 this evening, oil the Melbourne and Hawthorn railway line. A special train, returning from a land sale at Box Hill, pasßed Hawthorn station without stopping, and when it had turned the corner of Richmond Park came into violent collision with a train from Melbourne to Hawthorn, travelling on the same Hue of rails at a speed of 20 miles an hour, The Engine of the Melbourne train was driven through a first-class carriage next it, which it completely telescoped, the engino penetrating the greater part of the vehicle. The second and third carriages of the Hawthorn train were likewise telescoped, the wheels of one carriage resting on the seats of the,, other. There were many passengers in the train at the time of the collision. Twenty to thirty are injured, several very badly, and the case of some is deemed hopoless, So far as is at present known, however, none were killed outrigh'.
LATER PARTICULARS. MELBOURNE.. December 3. Received December 3, G p.tn. Particulars received regarding the railway collision last evening show that two carriages in eachtrain were completely smashed up, The one next the engino of the train from Melbourne was driven right through the next carriage, The scene at the accident was most distressing. Several of the passengers were only extricated from the wrecked carriages with extreme difficulty. Many of the injured were f arfully out about the head, and several have brokenlegs, arms, and ribs, and internal and spinal in]tiries. The total known to be injured is nearly thirty. Nine of the sufferers are now in the-Melbourne Hospital, and several are in the Albert Hospital. The accident is attributed to the special train fromßox Hill passing Hawthorn without stopping to allow the other from Melbourne to pass. According to tho latest information, W. Thomas has died from injuries received, and Ross is in a hopeleis Btato.
This day. The total number of those injured by the Richmond railway accidentia now known to exceed fifty, and by some the number is estimated at fully seventy,' Many of the sufferers have proceeded to their homes.
