10' Stand ■tiiia ~/.. Beason, tbo Thoroughbred Horso , Bred by Mr H. Itfdwbod in 1878,, ; and is by Tow ton (imported) from Waimea by Sir Molyor by Emigranl^Corported), Towtou (owßbiptherto.the Peer Marchioness) by from Cinizelli by Touchstone—Brocade > by PantaloonStud Book for Towton or Waimea'a ancestors, ~..,. ■. ,: Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the most successful thorough*; bred families of modern times. Aathe dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakeke, Totara, itenga, Papapa, .Wainui,, Kauri, Waiiti, Rama Rama, and Puriri, old Waimea has indeed left an imporishable name, and it would take a volume.to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old inare, and their descendants. The mention of Furiri's ancestors will re, call to breeder's the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Longlands, Papapa, Lacenfeed, Songster, Tanv burini, and a host of others; whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' cross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister, MarchioncßS, and whose dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. ! Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mention— '• That Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two iustralian Champion Races, also to Coßsack, Bay Middleton, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, the latter so well-known in this district as a sire. That Waimea's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, the' latter for years the premier stallion of Austialasia, who, in his turn,' gave us Grand Flaneur, Chester, and scores of other notables,' Towton's sister, Marchioness, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fishhook, Kosi> of Denmark. Angler, and King of
Clubs, tho latter is now in the Middle Paik Stud, Canterbury, That the P<er, Towton's brother, is tho sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darebin, That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winner of the V.R.C. Handicap, for 3 and 4 year' olds, beating a good field. That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tarnbourini, Kama Kama, Songster—sire of H<>rnby—Atalanta, dam of Pungawerewere, Waiiti, dam of Iris, That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and St. Leger, subsequently running Caractaeus to a head for the Derby, is now in tho Bundoova Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and sire of the Paiiitcr, Newminstcr, His Lordship, &c. lhat Puriri as a racehorse amonest, our vory best performers stood quite in the first rank, winniußtheDunediuDerby, beatingßnbery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, and Spray, and to quoto from the report " having all his field beaten half a milo from home, won hands down." Only Dead Heat would oppose' him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri' also won in a canter. As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary 10 stato that he was handicapped as a four-year-old Io carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877, 1J miles, and then started at 2 to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st3lbs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9stßlbs, and Foul Play, llyrs, onlj carried Sat 71ba. Add to Puriri'a undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and peilciraances, that he stands over 16 hands -with proportionate Bubstance all through, and owners of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at their services for the ensuing season-whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses, > Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two ftot prizes and two champion prizes at Patea. and first prize at WaDganui, also the champion (jup .for the best thoroughbred on the ground.
