AFTERNOON SITTING. ' Mr Buchanan in tho chair. engineer's rwobt. The report was icad as follows:—" I have the honor to submit the following short report upon the works within the district for the past month. The works in No 2 Ward consist of the Taueru road metalling contract, the protective works at Tc Ore Oro, and the metaling of the Akura loop line, The two former have recently been completed in a substantial and satisfactory manner. I learn that it is the intention of Mr John Bannister (whoso tender was accepted for the Akura wo'.k in the interim between this ami last Board meeting) to start the work, weather pemitting, on Monday the 27th instant. I will suggest, in conuecti"ii with the Taueru road metalling, that authority be granted to uudeitakc additional works so as to include the gravebing of c-.-rta : ii sections of the line which stand in much need of repair, This extia work I feel satisfied can be extctiti d at a smaller cost by arrangement with Mr Hart, vho ut stiil on the ground, than by advertising for so small a contract as the extra wo k would necessarily constitute. Of !k "Troys ia .band lor loans under the Roads a.,d .Bridge Construction ilct, all arc competed with the exception of No 6 Ward's application, which is at present in progress and will shortly be finished.—l have, Ac., C E. Bhkmnkk." —Tliosiigg"s*ion of the engineer re. the 'L.uerii road metalling was a«reul to andcxpciiditme to the amount of £oo authorised.

ACCOUNT.!. Pa) merits amounting to £284 5s 10d were passed. HORDSUIuBAXM TOIL (JATK. One tender was received for the lciso of the above.—The chairman said it was a question whether the toll gate was worth continuing, as it was aveled 10 provide for Accidents to the bridge which would now he provided for under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. He was inclined to recommend that the toll he done away with. —The clerk: The to'l was a'ao levied to'asBist iu paying the interest on the cost of the h idge.— Mr Bcetham thought all tolls tliould he abolished as being a one-horse way of co lecting a tax. If, however, a toll could he justified at all it could in thin ens?, as it wa3 the only way of getting at tiie people benefited by the loan raised for building the bridge.—The chaiumm suggested th it the matter be left to the Council with a recommendation that the toll lie abolished if not absolutely required to assist in paying interest This course was agreed to by the Board. COUNTY AJIA'mIAMATIOM.

Copies of resolutions from the Castlepoint and Tnrc.tahi-C'aiteiton Highway .Hoards were then read. The former wni in favor of amalgamation, the latter a^aijist; both agreeing to a north and south county. The clerk was directed to acknowledge receipt of resolutions and to state that the question had practically narrowed itself to the decision to he given at ihe various meetings that night. FAiitATOAAmrcmox.

Mr Chainlvrla'ii suggested t 1 at this stand over till next meeting, when Mr Macquarrie would be present and would be able to give the Board info'nialion on the matter,—

The engineer in leply to the chairman said he had not been in the l'ahiiittia district y> t. ' —Mr Chamberlain's suggestion was agreed to. The chairman said it might al-o be pointed out that the engineer was very busy with works under the Roads Construction Act and would hardly be able to do much for Pahiatua this year. The people there were quite right to look after their rates. — In reply to the chairman the clmk stated the ratc3 amounted to £2O, of which £)5 had been paid.—Mr Beeth.m said there was no doubt that before long the rates would be •something considerable from that district,— AITLICATION FOR ItOAD. Mr Walteman waled on the Board to ask that a road be made to the properties of himself, Mr Gray, and Mr Stone, situated just across tho Waipoua river.—The engineer showed a rough draft Of the work, which consisted of a cutting in the terrace embankment the other side of the new bridge down to the flat.—ln reply.to the chairman the clerk stated tha', the rates (if all paid up) only amounted to tome £3 a year. The properties hud been rated about four years, but one ratepayer was in arrear. —The engineer gave his cstima'c for the work required at £3s.—Mr Wakeman pointed .out that though they had not paid much in rate* yet their future rates would recoup the Board; tho road would not require repairs. The clnirman : That's an oxtended prospect!——lt was resolved after furth-T discussion, to apply for the amount under the Ro.rls Construction Act.—Tho chairman, iu answer to Mr Dagg, was not aware that seven millions had been applied for under the Act; he had not heard anything of the kind the indekatigabm; Mr Donovan waited upon the Board to learn the result of his app'ication and was informed that the road lie used would be opened up. The Board then adjourned.
