November 20. A. meeting of settlers interested in eetting up Races was hold at the Tenui Hotel on Saturday evening hat at 8 p.m. Mr Maokay being voted to the chair explained the object of the meeting, and read a telegram handed in by Mr J, W, Smith to the effect that the Hon. W, Johnston would allow the public the use of tho race course on tho Island Flat. Tho meeting bein? unanimous in op.nion that races should be held there in the earliest part of Mavcli next, nominated the followin? gentlemen as stewards and officers to make all requisite arrangements : Stewards: Messrs Taylor, Millor, Sheath, Boilean, Mackay, Carawo'l, ILindyside, J. A McKenzio, J. Drummond, J. W. Smith, J, lorns, and E. Moredith, jun. Judge: Mr E. Clifton, Starter: Mr J. Schofieltl. Clerk of Scales: Mr J. A. Perry. Okie of Course: Mr J. Holes. Hon. Secretary and Treasurer: Mr T. Mackay. Mr A. McHutcheon who had always acted so ably as Secretary and Treasurer to provious race meetings mi proposed, but through press of business had to decline tho offices on this ocoassion but expressed his desire to assist the Stewards in making tho meeting a success, On some future occasion I shall have more to say with respect to MrMcHutcheon's zealous and I may add unrecognized services in the cause of racing in this district, A number of "gentlemen were appointed to canvass the district for subscriptions. It was also decided to ask Messrs J, Drummond and T. Hill, gentlemen well known to the racing nublio to obtain contributions from our Wairarapa friends, The support previously acoorded from the Val'oy has done much to make our looal races a suceess heretofore, and on this occaasion if the same amount of support is forthcoming, we as a di6trlot will endeavour to our utmost to return a quid pro quo as sport and amusement. No efforts will be spared to make the good course here (which is a desideratum to racing men and horses) a first-class ono, A vote of thanks to the Hon. Mr Johnston for granting the use of the course, and the customary vote to the chairman terminated the business of the meeting. A subscription list was opened, and about £SO guaranteed in the Hotel, the spirited hostess civing ten guineas, A meetin: of Stewards will lie held, I understand on the 24th inst at 7.80. p.m. Very unseasonable weather was experienced here last week, and settlers were very much hindered in the work of shearing in consequence. The roads have auffored somewhat, several slips having taken place between here and Whakatftki. The Mangnpakelu crossing, however, remains intact.
