mO Stand .'tms - J ioftftoft,. the ThotoUghbMil Hobs l'ttrlrl; Bred by. Mr H.Redwood in 1873,*' and in by IWton (imported) from:W4imoa by Sir Hercules-Flora Molvor by Emigrant—Cornelia (imported) by Qrasshopper-Manto (imported), Towton (owa brother to the Peer and Marchionoßß)byMelbo«rno,' from Cinizelli by Touchstone—Brocade >l>y Pantaloon— Bombasine. See New Zealand or Engliah Stud Book for Towton or Wainiea's ancestors,. Such is the breeding of a direct descendant of one of the mostsuccesßJul thoroughbred families of modern times. As the dam of Manuka, Toi Toi, Harakeke, Totara, Renga, Papapa, Wainui, Kauri, Waiiti, Rama Rama, and 'Puriri, old Waimea has indeed left an imperishable name, and it would take a volume to recount the victories gained by the progeny of the old mare, and their descendants. _ | Tho mention of Puriri's ancestors will re call to breeders the victories in this Colony of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Kakapo, Longlands, Papapa, Lacenfeed,'Songster, Tarnbutini, and a host of others, whilst in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne—Sir Heroules' cross shone ont in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is from Towton's own sister, Marohioneßß, and whose dam, Coquette, is by Sir Heroules. Claiming close relationship to so many great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly rhention■That Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of two Australian Champion Baces, also to Cossack, Bay Middleton, Flora, 10, and Nutwith, tho latter so well-known in this district as a sire. That Waimoa'a sir*, Sir Hercules, was also sire, of The Barb, and YaUendon, the latter for years the premier stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, gave us Grand Flaneur, Chester, and scores of other notables, Towton's sißter, MarchioneßS, won the English Oaks, and is the dam of Fisbheok, Itosb of Denmark, Angler, and King of Olubß, the latter is now in the Middle Paik Stud, Canterbury. I That the Pier, Towton's brother, is the sice of Manuka, Peeress, Trov, and Darebin. That Manuka is the sire of Duohess, winner | of the V.R.C, Handicap, for 3 and 4 year olds, beating a good field That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tarnbourini, Kama Kama, Songster-sire of Inrnby-Atalauta, dam of Pungawerenere, Waiiti, dam of Iris. That the Marquis, who won the 2000 running Caractacus to a head for the Derby, is now in the Bundoora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and sire of the Paintor, Newminster, His Lordship, Ac. •Hurt Puriri as' a racehorse amonest our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, wmningtheDunedinDerby, beatingßribory, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, and Spray, andtoquoto from the report " having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won hands down." Only Dead Heat would oppose him in the Canterbury St. Leger, which Puriri also wou in a canter. As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped as a four-year-old to carry the crushing weight of 9st lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877,1J miles, and then started at 2 to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st3lbs allotted to him, Ariel, syrs, 9stßlbs. and Foul Play, Syra, onlj carried 6st 71ba. _ Add to Puriri's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and perlcnnanccs, that he stands over 16 hands with proportionate Biihstance all through, and owners of hrood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at thoir services for the ensuing season—whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses, Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patea. and first prize.at Wanganui, also the champion cup for tho beat thoroughbred on the ground.
