Tho promoters propose to purchase .the Empire Store (late Messrs Briggs & Co.'s) in Q.uecn-street, Mastorton, for the purposo of. a Theatro worthy of the town ami district, and capable of comfortably accommodating the largest audiences likely to be congregated. Preliminary airangements have already been made for securing the premises and land on strictly moderate terms. The original cost of the present buildings and site was £4,500. The promoters have accepted an offer conditionally for the purchase of these at £1,575. In addition to tbo Theatre, they will have a residence, from which a rental of 12s 6d per week nay be anticipated. The necessary alterations, for which plans have been already prepared, are estimated to cost £SOO. This will include one of the largest stages in the colony,'and Mating accommodation for 1,000 persons. Tho building iB centrally situated, and admirably adapted for Theatrical, Operatic, and Musical performances, Sails and Mast meetings, It will enable tho best Metropolitan Companies to visit this part of the district, and prove a deoidedjacquisition to the play-going residents and outßido publio, by placing heforo them the best of talent and finest of modern performances under the most advantageous circumstances possible, It will ilso be available for local exhibitions, such as Horticultural Shows, Bazaars, Publio lectures, Ac Tho new Theatre will be decorated in tho highest style of art, fitted with tho best scenery, and all the accessories for producing effective scenic displays. By being rendered attractive, it is believod that it will he largely patronised by the leading histrionio companies who visit at present only the sea-board oentres, and that it will bo rendered highly reproductive, as well as of the greatest Benefit, to the community by contributing to their amusement and instruction.
