;i THE MASTEBTQN. SCHOOL;'.:' ; Some few years the Masterton Public School' came oukhadly as compared Avith /other leading schools at the Inspector's ;ahnual examination we did not hesitate'to speak of it in terms of censure and to express an opinion thitt it ought to be, in results, the best school in the district. It gives us fljl /jfre more pleasure now to be able to state tfrat jt has taken, by the examination GOixMei yesterday, the position we desired Josej jit occupy. As the ; ' largest and best equipped school in the Waiiurapa it should, with the full staff of teachers which it has enjoyed, turn out as good, if not better, work than any country school in the Educational District. The expectation we formed of it has not been disappointed.' The per centage of the passes in the' school amounts this year as against 83 obtained last year, cap be no doubt that if r tis attendances tho past few .w.eeWliM'iiot been materially reduced by the measles epidemic the percent-J age wouldlhaye. been still higher. As! it is, the teaching staff may be fairly congl'atulatcdVon the result, which is of hard and that a layarlCprepflrtion of pupils failed in solhaevof "tlie; liighev standards 'j than in M^&oy&fi -but we uncjejjjv stand tli at the InspecfoiQ suit ;v to course on aj)poin|JvJ)>S) ojjiHtpri must' be is one higher standards which Wsimfms Three years ago in the fifth'and sixth division only a dote children'were presented, At the late examination the number put forward, was fifty, indicating that a much; larger per centage of the children are advanced to the upper classes of the school than was formerly jjiccase. We may accept the first jyork in the new. buildings,' as, a register general progress, and pjif f e'mk'/anjy look,, forward %$&( in "the Educational district; pFwijje}}-; that the teaching' staff, the cominittes and parents work together to obtain j the test.Ninltf.

AVBriggS, had a very nice show of meat at his establishment last evening) comprising lamb and veal very skilfully dressed, baokod up by the usual mutton, pork, and beef, It is about time the Greytown.Borough .Council did, something in the ( way,of olear'ing the-sitka .of'ihe Main-street,'in that township, as it presents anything but a road-like appearance at present, Rank" grass, docks, and all sorts of weeds, grow luxuriantly upon it. The Greytown Institute Committee have taken a step in the right direction by placing the whole of • the "Works, of Reference" from the Library in the', pub lio reading room.
The Greytown Cricketers held a very successful practice "yesterday afternoon, They evidently moan to hold their own this year as they take every advantage of One weather for practising. Mr 0. M, Brnnskill, of the Boys! Hotel, IWherston, has forwarded to us a sample of a superior. blend of pure Scotch whiskey, directly imported by himself from the well-known house of McDougall and Co,, Glasgow, which he maintains is superior to any yet introduced into the colony. The sample sent to us has a fine flavor and a beautiful aroma, and without pretending to be an expert in judging whiskey, we have not the slightest doubt that it is worthy of the commendations bestowed upou it by Mr Brnnskill, The following is our weather report for tlio week onding November 18:—We have had another wet, disagreeable week, | llaili fell on four days r the rain fall for the week is 1-730 inches, The wind has beeul breezy at times, and principally from ut south-westerly direction, The bnroueter is now high, the mean reading | bcstnJ 29-765 inches, Perhaps we may now have a little more genial weather than we have experienced lately, The thermometer mean reading for the week u54 tab, It was quite a disappointment that Old Sol veiled his face in such dense cloudi on the 11th inst,, bo that not the ali»htest view was obtained of the annular eclipse on that date atMasterton. Another disappointment I Owing to tlio wet weathor on the nights of tlieHth and 15th, no showers of meteors were seen here. 1 Query—What may be expected if, on some future occasion, our earth's surface is visited by a host of these fiery gentlemen ?
