CONTEMPT OF COURT.
A singular scene occurred at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday during the hearing of the case of Anderson v Fenwick and Kennedy. The plaintiff, while in the witnesß-box, was asked by Mr Carew, R.M., when he had last seen a certain account-book he used in hii / business, and tho former replying that he had not seen it for over three years, the following oolloquy took piace:—His Worship: When a man Bays he has not seen such a book at his office for three:) years, I must say I look upon his evidence with suspicion.—Mr Macdonald (counsel for plaintiff): Your Worship, you must remember that the business is very extensive.—Hiß Worship: Leave the box, witness.—Witness (while leaving the box): Pretty good cheek for you to say that to me; it is like your cheek.—His Worship; Did you say that to me J (There p? no . reply,) I)id you saj'tljat io jel~ Witness:' Yes.-Hjs (to tjie bailiff): Mr arrest that man for contempt of Cqurt, and keep him, in custody until the case is finished—At the conclusion of the case hjs Worship sajd, j Bring your prisoner forward, Mr tjarnpi, (To Mr Anderson) i Have you anything to say why punishment should notbojinflicted upon you for contempt of Court in tolling mo it was like my cheek 1— son : I did not say it was like your cheek, —His Worship: You said, "It is, pretty good cheek for you to say that to roe, It'i like your cheek."—Mr Anderson: I don't think I said that, I said something about cheekiness.—His Worship: You argue with me, lam unfortunately placid in the position of judge and jury, and cannot allow you to argue the matter. Have you anything to say t—Mr Andnnonil do not think I committed contempt. Hit Worship: I have decided that you did commit a contempt of Court.
