The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1882. THE CARTERTON MEETING.

We fear that the meeting' held at Carterton on Saturday will not help the County! amalgamation movement. It was intended that'tKis gathering should be a district meeting, but the local settlers! converted it into a Carterton meeting, pure and-simple. From a Carterton point of view amalgamation . is undesirable; .from a Wairavapa •point of view it is desirable. Mr Bunny ljit the nail ;on the head when he ppinted out that a large county would it> a measure: do away with the petty, paltry,: personal views which were so Apparent. Mr Booth, it is truo, disdained to discuss the question from a mere Carterton standpoint; . but even he cannot? reasonably be expected to detach! himself from his immediate surroundings, and he evidently found a difficulty in - bringing forward any broad, ;solid, arguments against the pro poSjil. 1 The sum total of what he and tlie other opponents of amalgamation said was that it didn't suit Carterton and they wouldn't have 1 it. 'The township and environs of Carterton are possibly strong. enrnigh to upset the proposal, however Jmjich' /it; may be . desired by othbr parts ofi this district. ' The promoters of tlie movement will' not very readily carry their point, It is unfortunate for them that at the late meeting they had ' Mr' ''Phillips on their side. Mr Phillips offered the county town to Carterton as a sort of ■ bribe,; and' coolly stated : that he had made a partial arrangement of .ridings figainafc the north and in favor of the south, and, possibly with a view to propitiate the Cartertonpeople stillfurther, ; he abused Masterton in round-terms, Of course the sliccess of an amalgamation movement .depends, upon cultivating a kindly, feeling between the various sections of "the district,'and tho throwing ■ of stinkpots into, the proposal \vas about the maddest thing a promoter, of amalgamation could do. Fortunately Mr Phillips' "gasconade" .was only laughed at, and it was quite evidont that the other members of his party did] not endorse; liis Mews, Wd sincerely trust that amalgamation will be carried, but we'have as io ;the- result. Mr McGregor, who is taking a lead op this question, is a capable 'and earnest man, who has advanced arguments for the proposal which yet remain to be refuted, but the-real tug pf war comes in, obtaining, signatures to petitions, and here lie . Has* arrayed agaihst him very powerful . adversaries. ? Mr, McGregor has a good' cause, lhit' 'unfortunately good causesdc>not, always v triiimph, f . Vli ,

The soiree* hold at the, Odd Fellow Hall, Feathenton, 1 dn Thursday evening,! under the auspices of the Cricket Club passed off most successfully, in spite of the bad weather, about fifty couples being present, Mr Hyde Parker presided at the piano, and dancing was Vept up until the small hours ,of the morning.
