The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1882. THE SALVATION ARMY.
A detachment of the Salvation Army, the latest religious craze, will shortly, visit New Zealand, The Wairarapa will probably be spared the infliction of the projected invasion, as it is only in large centres of population that its battles can be fought jyjtji advantage. Money is the sinews of war, in religious contests, and ic is by-a judieious gathering in of contributions and a careful paying out of the same that General Booth has succeeded in keeping bis army in the field, Human nature all over the world is, very impressionable to religious influences, especially when they appear in some novel guise. Sankey and Moody, for example, struck out a new combination of preaching und singing, which was an immense success. Their influence has possibly beenmore beneficial.'to. the world than the more modern sensation of the Salvation Army, and in a very beautiful hymnal collection familiar to almost every child in each English-speaking community they have made a permanent niche for themselves in the Temple of Fame, The novelty presented by General BpgTH is more sensational, but decidedly less admirable, Religion is portrayed in slang phjases and vulgar catch-words. Nothing can 1$ : more beautiful than the vulgar tongue in which the Scriptures are wont to be read,'but nothing can be less beautiful than the vulgar tongue in 'which gopjH and his followers expound %m.', |s j#r as we can hear, there is an unreasonable age of clap-trap in the Salvatjonj Army, business,' ancj though it -has' attained by.nipio) gtws to a vast sijie, it may be expected f,o ey.qporajte.. again, .almost as ,<juick|y as it has grown, It is the comet of a season, and no doubt people in New Zealand will be as ready to be dazzled by it as their countrymen at home, Fortunately in this colony there are fewer persons who are poverty stricken and miserable than there are at home, Th/ 3 great mass meetings at home have to a great extent .been composed of classes which" are not to be found in this more prosperous community, and it will simply be impossible s to work up such scenes in New Zeal and as have been matters .of every day occurrence in England. ;
