The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1882. MASTERTON TOWN LANDS TRUST.

The Masterton Town Lands Trustees came to a sensible conclusion on Friday last ; with reference -to tlie Town Hull :site, when they placed it f\t tliß'dißpoSfll of thdGovernment <at a reasonable price. It was suggested to . them itliat! they Should give May. .this piece of land to facilitate the erection of a suitable''Court-house, but we fail to see that such a body can iii any way be, called upon to give £SOO towards a Court-house, With equal propriety tliejf might be expected to contribute a,few hundreds towards a gaol, or a thousand towards a lunatic asylum. (! The Goyernment is bound to maVe adequate provision for its own; departments in this town, and it has not the slighte t claiiu 'on a local Educational Trust .to find ways and means. It may be' said that" it has, in the present instance, made no such claim; but it is evident that it has done so in an indirect and roundabout way. The sitei iri admirably adapfel for a public building, and the Trustees, if they decide not to erect a, structure upon it'themselves, will probalily'Hold it in reserve, so. : that,it may,.be utilised, ; sooner or later, ' for,the benefit of the town. It is also a inatter for, congratulation ' that the Trustees are in no hurry to dejeido upon the method in which they will expend the insurance money they have received in compensation for the loss of the old Town Hall. It should no doubt be applied to the erection of some , other building. There is every , prospect of private enterprise supplying, a structure, suitable for jpublic meetings and entertainments and it would be more to the advantage of the borough if a building of another •character were erected, A building which , would . answer as a ; drill-sbecl, show place, and as a 'grand stand for Caledonian and other sportfe,: i would be of great value to the 'borough. It has already been suggested .that the Park would He a suitable site for such a;Rtmtuve, awl the, suggestion is one well worthy of consideration. The• Mastertort Part indents 1 a Very different appearance now to what it .did a year ago. The Park Trustees have latterly made many and marked improvements- in it and if the Town trustees came to their aid' by adding to the grounds an ornamental building suited for. the general show -requirements'of the borough, tliii park ' would' cease' to. be. a white' efephant, and hecome ) . I the, I| most>pj)pu;/ lar resort and the finest recreation ground in the whole of the Waiiarapa district, The Masterton park, we may add, is one of those local institutions which the Town Lands Trustees have aided in the past and which they will no doubt continue to support whenever a favorable opportunity offers.
