The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1882. THE PASTORAL SHOW.
To-mobrow will be a gala day in the Wairarapa in honor of its annual Pastoral gathering. We may fairly anticipate that the coming exhibition, taken as a whole, will register the progress of the district by indicating an advance in quality of exhibits as well as in number on any previous year. It is also 'safe to prophecy that the attendance of visitors will be much greater than on any former occasion. The committee this year have been successful in making satisfactory arrangements with the Kailway authorities for cheap fares from Wellington, and the result of them must be favorable to big takings at the gate. We trust that the encouragement given to the Committee, this year at their annual gathering will compensate them for the indefatigable perseverance with which they have year after year worked up a show in spite of many and serious obstacles, Every year now this display of the stock and products of our district ought to make marked strides. Hitherto it has fairly represented the horses, the cattle, and the sheep of the Wairarapa, but it has been weak in almost every other, section. This year the Committee have endeavored to make efficient arrangements for a new department, that of Horticulture, and possibly next season they may feel strong enough to launch out in other directions. A difference of opinion exists ss to whether surplus revenue should be applied to reducing debtor to strengthening the annual shows. On the whole wo are disposed to believe that it will be to the interest of the Society to let the debt I alone for a few years and devote all its available means to improvements in the Show grounds, and to additions to the prize list. A certain amount of money already spent on improvements is, to a considerable extent, wasted, On emergency, a shed has been run up in one spot of one size and pattern, and another dotted down somewhere else of other dimensions, without any pretence to beauty, symmetry, or harmony. 'lt is time that some design of buildings suited to the grounds and fitted for the future needs of the Society was obtained, so that when any additional structure was required it might form a part of the permanent sheds of the association, The district is now wealthy enough to supply an ornamental Show ground in place of the excessively ugly sheds in which its business is at present transacted, As the Show ground is a sort of' front window in which the show goods of the Wairarapa are placed, it will pay] to make it presentable. ■ Bees aro profitable. - Mr J, Vile informs us that within nine days he Las had three Bwarms from one hive. ,

It Beouiß impossible to do any good for poor old Fitzsimmoiiß, When he left the Hoapital in the first instance, he complained, that he was turned out prematurely, and oft this representation the committee re-admitted him. He-soon, however, shewed signs of restlessnesß, and a craving for indulgences which were not good for him. Yesterday in spite of the remonstrances of the custodian he marched away from his comfortable quarters to seek his old haunts,
To-morrow lias been proclaimed a, public holiday in the principal business centres of the Wairarapa in connection with the Pastoral Show. Special trains at single fares run.from Masterton at 9.30 and 11 a.m, to the grounds, and from Weilington a big train at excursion rates is expected. The admicsion charge to the show before noon is five shillings and after twelve o'clock a shilling. In addition to the ordinary exhibits there will bo a special attraction in the Horticultural department, which will be held in a commodious building specially erected for the occasion. After the show Mr ]?, H. Wood announces a sale of exhibits, and in the evening a plain and fancy dress ball is announced as a closing attraction of the days' programme.
The next English and European mail via Pan Francisco, closes on Saturday next at Masterton.
The Committee oi the "Wairarapa Horticultural Society wish it to be distinctly understood that at to-morrow's show only one payment of a shilling is necessary in the afternoon, and the same in the evening, as passes will be granted to persons wishing to go out as often aB they like.
The first regular practice of the Greytown Fire Brigade 'will be held next Thursday, The roll -will bo 'called at 7 o'clock sharp, and fines for non-attendance will be strictly enforced. A correspondent of the 'Timaru Herald" says they have a grand trout stream at Silver-stream, He states:—" I have taken out as many as nine before breakfast, the largest weighing Gib, I may also say I hooked over 400 last season." The public school at Masterton will be closed to-morrow as that day has been proclaimed a public holiday. Wo were misinformed as to tho Papawai block not having been put through the Native Lands Court in Greytown, as it was, and some of it has already changed hands, Mr St. George of Greytown having purchased and leased 400 acres. It is very likely some more of it will have changed ownership very soon as there are several parties looking after it, The Carterton Town Board met at the Institute on Monday, all the commissioners being present. It was agreed to reduce the rent of the Town Hall due from the Star of the Valley Lodge, I. O. G.T. to .£3 2s Gd on condition that that amount was paid promptly, In reply to a letter tho clerk was directed to inform the Wavorley Town Board that this Board received the license fees from the County Council for hotels situated in this Town District. Accounts amounting to £9 Cs 4d were passed fur payment, Mr A. Campbell was olected treasurer. It was resolved thattho Board should adopt "Tlia Rating" Act, 1882," that Mr Hinton be requested to remove his fence from Rutland Road forthwith, and, that the holes in the covering of the drain opposite the Marquis of Normanby Hotel and the school should bo lepaired. In consequence of several members and the clerk being engaged in making preparations for the Pastoral show tho meeting of the Taratahi-Carterton Highway Board was adjourned from to-day until next Tuesday. We would remind our readers of the pla : n and fancy dress bill to take place at the Public Hall, Carterton, on tho night of the Pastoral Show. The soirees given by tho Carterton Band have become so popular and their management is always so efficient that we need only say that this gathering is under their auspices to recommend it,
