. MrG. Ross of Cross' Creek left yesterday morning for the purpose of endeavoring to raise the Westport by meats of an invention lately patented by him. Before leaving, he was presented with it purse of sovereigns by Mr M. Benny on behalf of himself and his fellow employees at Cross' Creek, We have received a sample of coal or lignite picked up in the vicinity of Peatherston. It bums with a strong sulphurous smell, a red heat, but without flame. It certainly seems strange that no one takes this matter up. There can be no doubt that a payable seam of coal does exist near Peatherston, small pieces being repeatedly found in different places. The sample we have received nas broken off a much larger piece brought into Featherston yesterday. An amusing inoident occurred at the Featherston railway station yesterday morning. A number of calves had been loaded at the sheep yards for Wellington, and had been shunted away, when a cow managed to oreep into an empty sbeep truck, evidently with the intention of following her calf to Wellington, How shemanagedto get in was the mystery, as the space was only 80 inches high, by a little over 3ft Gin. broad, Was this instinct or reason ?
The manager of the Wellington City Tramway Company advertises for good upstanding horses, Mr T. McCarthy will be in Masterton op Monday and Tuesday next and in Greytown and Fenthereton on Wednesday for the purpose of purchasing any suitable animals that may be offered,
Messrs J. lorns, J. M'acara, and A. Elkins commenced to canvass Hie town yesterday for the Masterton and Opaki Jockey Club, but we regret to learn that their efforts did not meet with much encouragement. We hear, however, that they have been more successful in their efforts this morning, We learn of the appointment of the New Zealand Loan and Moroantil Agency Company, Limited, to the agency in this colony for Messrs Rustoo, Proctor & Go's Bteam-engioes and machinery, The ex> tensive works of this well-known firm are situated in Lincoln, England, and they have gained' a worldwide reputation, Their catalogue and price list of agricultural maohinery, sewing machinery, flour mills, mortar nulls, centrifugal pumps,and other articles, all constrncted on the most approved principles and with the latest improvements, may be obtained on application to the Masterton agent. Our illustrated supplement to-morrow will contain the usual interesting collection of amusing and instructive articles and sketches. That attractive tale" The Cost of a Kiss," is conoluded in this number, and a lively story entitled " A Cabinet Secret," is given in a complete form, A man named Edward Williams was brought to the Masterton Hospital from Messrs Burnett and Yule's mill with a fractured leg caused by a log falling on it. Both bones of this leg are broken, and the fe'low limb is very much bruised. We understand that Mr Williams is a married man, and that his family reside at Carterton. He is receiving every attention at the hospital, aiid is likely to recover as speedily as may be possible. from the injuries he has received.
Two men named George Saunders and John' Prior were brought up before his Worship the Mayorthis morning, charged with being drunk and disorderly, and were fined Ss each. The Masterton Cadets parade this afternoon, and the Volunteers assemble for Inspection this evening. That disagreeble epidemio "the measles" has made its appearance in Masterton. and is, we areoorry to learn, thinning the ranks of the public school, just at a time when a regular attendance is almost indispemible to successful passes at the impending annual examination.
