Siitj—A correspondent signing himself, "A, Shareholder" has rushed into print nver the proceedings of the Wellington Meat Export Company gonorally, and their recently issued circular iu particu lar. If a shareholder, one of the circulars was certainly posted to him in the ordinary course, yet, by. his own admission, hia knowledge of it was derived solely from the copy published iu your columns. Your readers may therefore fairly doubt whether he really has any right to sign himself a shareholder. Next in sequence; is his flippant dictum that the Directors ore premature in stating that there will he only ou ship to load next season, and in his wisdom expressing his belief that more will follow. On reference to the oircular I find it merely expressing regret that only one ship has been secured—meaning of course up to that date,—but unlike your correspondent it ventures no opinion as to (he probability of more following. I may, howevor, now inform him that of the two companies now trading to the colony one has positively refused to send another ship, and the other will do so only.on the guarantee of five consecutive cargoesterms which, of course, the Directors could not think of accepting. Thon follows his description qf the erratio sayings a»4 movements flf the Directory!—" First they order machinery, thon they counter order, then order again >'« such a way that It might have been taken as an order or it might not, and now to finish they order a Haslam, when the condition of meat arriving in England proves, beyond a doubt, that the Bell-Coleman is by far the beat." The faots re order of machinery are simply these: Mr Pharazyn (one of the Directors) being in England, and consequently in a position to get the most reliable and recent information, machinery order was cabled to him giving him full diaoretionary power &b to the maker. Believing, from what he had seen in New York, 'and"from further Inqufrieß in London, that WAihtnonis, machine .then being constructed "by Mr iChdlmers ot Hawkes' B.ay 1 , would be found hr every way greatly superior tp'any' other hitherto used, he delayod[exeoution of t|be order until a trial of the new machine was made. This .provine unsatisfactory tfce imperative order referred to in the circular was sent so as to make sure ot no further delay. . So much for the orratic sayings and doings of the directorate. As to the Haslam versusßell Coleman mnchine.and alleged superiority of condition in which the meat'dealt with, by the latter was delivered, Shareholder 'njay' prJSahiJy have grounds for. hia very positive gpinion, but his letter altogether fails to disclose thena. Certificates .from the Orient Company, and a}t reports hitherto reoeived of the condition in which the'lMataura's" cargo was delivered go to prove that the Haslam machine has produced results fully equal to the Bell-Coleman In the " Dunedin."-,' As to the prices realised by the respective cargoes," Shareholder" may he, Ignorant of the faot that some of the "MntauraV cargo con. sisted of such unsuitably fat ewes that the mere fact of their having been sent all-the way from Canterbury alone prevented their rejection by the Directors. He also,chooses to ignore the wellknown biroumatance of the " Duuedin's" arrival 'at! a' time when a severe snowstorm had bjopd fjje'railway's and interrupted supplies, while that of the' " Mataura" arrived during the very worst season of the year, Shareholder" io also confident that, the small amouns voted fpr a' direptiteanj service, together with the little inducement a£ present offered by meat freezing, will prevent the early establishment of a direct steam service", as stated by the circular. Head in thelight efwhatlhav'e proved the WQrtj)}essness qf his other statements to be, anclalspin tliat'qf to-day's telegram re proposed esiablifhment by Slbtnan & Co. of a new steam: service without any subsidy, it would, only ba'a wagte of your valuable space to .deal; further with his letter, beyond advising him to avoid circulars and other matters so evidently beyond his weak digestion,: Summing up; what !■: have written, showing l tho'-impossibility;' of- getting sailing vessels in 'sufficient; number, it must surely mean that to steam we must mainly look for relief,"and' 'steam means shore maoljinery.
