THE BOROUGH COUNCIL
■ LAsl evening the Mastertonßorough Council decided to, give its engineer Mr James Russell, three months notice. Considering tbe peculiar; relations which have existed for some time past,'between the Public Works Committee and the Engineer, this course wasneceasaryin tbe public interests, more especially as that Committee, with tbo .exception of Cr Gapper, displays" a Vicar of Bray" attachment to office, The ratepayers having failed to support tho loan policy of the Works Committee iit would have been better for that body to have allowed the responsibility of conducting the Public works of tbe town, to'rest on those members of the Council who opposed borrowing;' Sonie of the Councillors though they may not be exactly weathercocks, display a little want of backbone, and we are not at all sure that this pliancy on their part is calculated to promote the interests' of the borough, or to inorease the confidence of the ratepayers in their representatives. The Councillors who cried " we can't get on without a loan I" now say " we are prepared to do without one.'.' No doubt the Councillors who are willing to make bricks without straw, believe that they are promoting the interests of their constituents by the course they are taking. We are quite willing to give them credit for acting from a sense of duty, but at the same time, we would have thought more of them had they taken a little higher Btand,

The Greytown Fire Brigade's first practice oame off Inst evening. At 680 the engine was run ont and taken up t<> Captain Baillie's house, when the suction hose was quickly attached and lowered into his well. At the same time two lengths of delivery hoso was made fast and pumpiiur soon commenced, but for some time the jot was very pour, when it was discovered, the connection in tho suction hose was not screwed up, which was at once done, when the c))ange was very marked as the jet was now very good, sendiug the water in a good stream full 60 feet high, which seemed to astoni&h a great many, as, judging by the appearance of the eni-ine, one can hardly credit its power.. After.keeping the pumps going for about half an hour, Captain Baillre gave the word to roll up the hose, which was done very quickly, and the engine was soon convoyed back to the shed. It was very generally remarked by ajl who attended last evening's practice that jf such an engine had been in the township so#?.e years ago the largest portion, if not all of jthe fires which have been in Greytown, would have hoen confined to tho one building in which they originated, and the inhabitants of that Borough are to be congratulated on having such .an efficient engine, in their midst, The proyisiopaj committee meeting of the Brigade which was to taken place before the practice did not come off as Mr Book, late secretary, tele, graphed that he could not attend, he having all tho papers. The usual weekly practice of tho Greytown Philarmonic Society takes place tomorrow in the Town Hall, at 7.30 sharp.
