Havelook, this day. John, MsDiiwell's house at Kaituna Valley, six and a half miles from Havelock was: burnt to the ground at 4 o'clock this morning. The fire was occasioned by the bursting of a knrosene lamp. The children were reaoued. The furniture was all burn*. The building alone was insured for £l5O. Auokund, this day, fjeorge Duncan, aged eighteen, and William Leighton, his cousin, while working at briekmaking at Hemler*,,!',, Mill, were.buried alive by a fall of earth 14fthigh. WatsjnDuncan noticed the accident from a distance, and went and dug where he beard the voice »f Leiglit.ui, and got him out alive. ■ /When George Duncan was got out he was dead, having evidently been suffocated. The bank had loosened through late rains, The City Council havo refnscl to take a poll of the burgesses on the question of bringing into operation or otherwise the Contagious Diseases Act. At yesternight's Council several CouncilloKi expressed an opinion lhat legal proceedings should be taken against a so-called religious paper for printing an obscene advertisement intended as a .-kit on an Act. Sir George Grey has promised a further gift of old manuscripts to the Auokland Library. The Patea Harbor Board having been brought to book for alleged apathy in the matter of improving the river entrance, a general resignation is imminent. The ohairman and one inembßr'has already resigned.
WANGANUI AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
, : Wanoandi, October 19. The Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association's annual show was held to-day, The weather was fine, and a large number of visitors from ail parts of the coast were present. The exhibits in number showed a Blight falling off hut.the quality of the stock of ad descriptions showed gnat improvement, the horses and cattle in particular. In the throughbred entires, Hippocampus, the property of Mrs W. Walters, of Auckland, gained; first and champion prize; also a silver cup for being the best blood entire on the ground. Cap-a-pie, the property of the Auckland Stud Company, was second. Patriarch! Dilkie, and Barbar' lan wero also exhibited. The champion pnze for Clydesdale stallions was gained by Mr W. (Jraig's Sir. Robert Bruce. The champion prize .fjr purebred bulls was awarded to Sir Hercules, bred by lienor McLean & Co., of Penrose (Auckland), and now the property of Messrs Arundal and Ross.
