The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1882. SENSATIONAL JOURNALISM.
Yesterday our Masterton contemporary published a sensational article in connection with a recent appointment to the teaching staff of the Masterton Public School. We are not prepared to follow the example of our contemporary by parading before the public the names and qualificali ,ns of the lady teachers of that establishment. We believe that it is both cruel and unmanly, when no public good can be possibly obtained, to allude in ft maper which must necessarily give pain to ladies who are engaged in our local school, and who certainly }i.avc not deserved to have their names bandied about for the amusement of the lovers of sensational journalism. While we feel that we are debarred from answering certain highly colored statements made by our contemporary, in which ladies names are introduced, we have no hesitation in replying to another part of the said, article where our contemporary intimates that certain members of the School Committee, viz, Messrs Boddington, Payton, and He'i'cn,in' connection with a recent appointment displayed partiality or favoritism, We take the liberty of stating plainly that this insinuation is an absolute, unmitigated, and unwarranted falsehood. If there is the slightest ground for such a statement.it would be very easy to bring under the notico of the Inspector or the Board in a formal and legitimate manner the fact that unfair means have been used in connection with an appointment, No such formal charge is likely to be made simply because there is not the slightest evidence to support it, The whole thing is a piece 'of " sensational journalism" built on imaginary facts which will not for a single instant stand investigation. . Just at the present time when the Inspector's annual examination draws near and every nerve is being strained to prepare pupils for it, this reckless throwing of a bomb-shell into the school is particu- i iarly to be deplored. It has taken a longtime to work the school' up, but one oftwo industrious and unscrupulous mischief-makers can work it down in a very brief, period. We re-assert that the charges and inuendos indulged in by our contemporary are incapable of proof, that they will not stand the test of investigation, and the only purpose they serve is to pandoi to the tastes of those who enjoy seim'tional journalism,'and are indifferent as to the.costat-which it is .supplied or the injury it may do to an important educational institution;
