The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY OCTOBER 16, 1882. AMALGAMATION.

An effort lias been wade to hiring local bodies to a ■ common agreement on the question of County boundaries, in order, as Mr Booth expressed it," to get a first pull at the £200,000 available for road . construction." The obtaining a slice of this cakejwas regarded by many as of more immediate importance than amalgamation. Tbe decision of the Wairarapa West County on Saturday, last, is fatal to this effort. That body regards' amalgamation as of greater importance thin, the pull at the £200,000. Tt believes that the slice'of the cakti can .be obtained in either case, and it also is of the opinion'that threefifths of the ratepayers ..will .sign a petition by January next in favor of amalgamation."We, on the other hand, accepted a North, and South County—' first, to get'the pull at the £200,000, and, secondly, because we did not believe three-fifths of the "ratepayers would declare themselves in favor of amalgamation. Of course- the main argumerit of the " first pull" is now " gone by the board." No immediate adjustment of the question can take place, and • applications under the Roads Construction Act must be sent in irrespective of contemplated changes of boundaries. We shall be glad to find that we were wrong in supposing that three-fifths of the ratepayers would not petition for amalgamation. We still liave serious doubts on this point. If they do not, there will hare been an undesirable delay of several months in gettipg the district into harness under the new. and improved local self-government.,regulations. If, on the other hand, the requisite signatures are obtained, the result, viz., one grand County, will more than compensate for the delay and for any possible loss which may accrue under the Koad Construction Act grants, The tide has turned in favor of amalgamation within i the last few days and we hppe it will prove strong enough to carry it. The advantages which wereto be obtained!' by an immediate, settlement of tfte' County boundaries are now no longer available. . The opportunity, of immenow the only question before the public !b amalgamation. ;The pronioters of this proposal are very sanguine, and I we. shall be pleased to find that they have not underrated the "'difficulties incidental to giving effect to it.' m promoters, too, deserve our respect as 'being disinterested, seeing that at; least one half of them .must cease to occupy the honorable position of County Coun* cillor if they carry ..their point. The district now is ..awkwardly and inconveniently divided'fcV taking a proper pull atthe;£2.oo,ooo vote, An immediate. amalgamation .or; an immediate north and south diyision iwould, s ha3je been a great practical' gain, and? we regard our inability to. secure one or the other as a great practical loss. It is, however, tio use crying over spilt milk, and if amalgamation be the out-; come of the 1 om .we shall be very well contented, The uncertain'chance of
