Solicitors i Messrs Brandon, Shaw, and Brandon, Secbetaby. {pro (em.): Brokers : Messrs Ledger and Hickson, Custom House Quay, Wellington. This property, lately known as tho" West Wanganui Coalfields," which it is proposed to transfer to the new Company, is held by the proprietors under two leases from tho Crown' of 320 acres each for ,10 years, at a I total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty ' of 6d per ton, or one-fiftietli of the Coal raised. It is situated in tho West Wanganui Inlet, on the North-Weßt Coast of tho Middle Island, 100 miles from Nelson, IGO miles from Wellington, 10 miles South of Cape Farewell, and about 20 miles by road from Collingwood in Golden Bay. This inlet, or land-locked harbor, is the best on the West Coast, covering i distance of some 9 miles in length by H in breadth, and being acted upon bj the sea only is never subject to floods, while considering its contiguity to all the centres of population, it is calculated that screw steam colliers will be enabled to make from 8 to 10 trips per month.. The Coal is good for all-round pirposes, and is well-known in Wellington, \Y. Nelson, and other places, as tho clean ..it and best "household." The field presents tho greatest advantages for an economical working; tho Coal measuring on an average about 3ft Gin thick, is the easiest to work (on the '■ Longwall" system) for tho production of large Coal without slack or waste. The strata abovo tho Coal is soft, and shafts can be put down without the uso of powder. There is abundance or mining timber close at hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, ybiph go far to increase the value of the mines. Tho present propriatfirj, in order to satisfy themselves that the Coal sjljmde'd over a , large area, lately, at considerable expense, put down several bore holes, which were attended with thorough satisfactory rcsultß, and it is estimated that the property will yield 2£ million tons of Coal, or about 00 tons per day for 30 years. It is r stjmaigd sat when the surface works are .constructed, pd the Mine opened out that 2000 tons of fioa} pau bp rjjsed per 1 week, and put on boar,d ship aj a .cost of 7s per ton, and sold at from 13s to 1.5 a per ton, leaving a profit of say 6s per ton, or op 2.QUO tons £OOO per week, The contiguity of the Mine to the propossd staithe, and to the cutrnnco of tho Inlet, greatly enhances its.valuo, as vessels will be enabled to load and put to sea with des- '' patch. The statistics of 1881 show the increasing demand in New Zealand for coal, and the .inability of our colleries to meet the same; although in that year 80,000 tons more were 1 raised than in the previous year, the imports from Australia were also greater during tho ' Bame period, and it is said by those com* potent to judge, that if all the Coal Mines at work and projected in Now Zealaud were properly developod, there would still be a steady and increasing demand, ; Operations can be commenced, and the Mine opene, dout, and Coal put in the mar- \ iet without copsjderßJble expense, The sur- [ face works will be extended a'p tha put-put r , increases, It is therefore proposed that the Company shall proceed to work the mine as soon as 1000 shares (irrespeotiveof promotere shares) have been subscribed for.
The estimates given below, ate for the full completion of the works.. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses incurred pioviDg tho lease aud for their interest in the Mine, These shares will not bo transferable until a dividend shall be paid on the [ subscribed capital. Over 300 snares have already been taken up by the present proprietors.
