The public in this district are beginning to suffer soma .inconvenience,, from the periodical ■ absences of Mr Wardell, E M., at Wellington. - Yesterday a number of defendants wore dancing attendance'at the Court at 10-a.m., and were told to coine again at the same hour this morning..; only to Betequested te re appear at 12 30 p.m. ;It is quite time that this sort of thing was put a,stop,to. The Government are bound to mako better provision than thia.for the; due udministratiou of justice.. . , . , Last evening Mesdames Corbett and Nicol entertained a number of their friends with a children's fancy dress ball. Some sixty juveniles assembled on this occasion, and the " toiil ; ensemble" was the prettiest pageant that lias yet been witnessed in the .Wairarapa. , The character costumes wero admirable, and the animated and-vivacious little forms, which graced them still more attractive. Bright eyes sut off the gay costumes, and as the majority of the youttg folks knew how. to dance the picture preaeulod was all life and motion. Among the-little girls there were so.ne very amusing and successful representations. Two little gems of housemaids and a-wonderful old English gentlewoman with cap,:cane, and spectacloa b'ein? perhaps the most noticeable. The bojr, too, came out strong as soldiers, sailors, firemen, gorgeous young Turks, field marshalls, clowns, harlequins and pantaloons. The principal charm o f the gathering was the thoroughness with which one. and all entered in to the spirit of the dances anil amusements. ; About ten an adjournment was made to a very, prettily arranged supper table, and the party broko-up at a very late;- juvenile hour. It 'will he long romembered by 1 those who had the pleasure of taking part in it as one of the most enjoyable evenings spent in their yonng existence. '
It is understood says the Post, that in addition to the observations of the Transit of Venus which are to be taken by the Surveyor-General, ftlr M'Kerrow, on the Mount Cook Reserve, separate observations will be taken by the Chief Surveyor of tho Wellington District (Mr J. W. A. Marchnntj and Capt. Hewitt, R.N7, at some point in the VVairaropa country. In this way a double chance will be secured as the weather may be fine on one side of the Rimutaka range but cloudy on the other,

Messrs L: j, Hooper 4 Co. lit up their new premises "(the 'Boti Marahtf Warehouse) for the first time last evening. -The display in the windows was of a very superior character, especially on tho drapery side, Tho central attraction in the window was a life-size wax figure of the celebrated Mrs Langtry; arranged round in a thoroughly artistic manner were dress pieces, elegantly draped in many shades of color and variety of material, charming hats, which displayed the skill of thp London and Parisian milliners, " ducks" of bonnets, and various other beautiful articles charging t.o fb eye and dangerous to the pocket. Tha hijwijonio.us arrangement of the whole fanned a most pleasing picture which was greatly admired by the numerous persons who paid visits of inspection.' To-day Messrs Hooper & Co. commenced business in earnest., '
The Government (writes the Wellington correspondent of a Southern paper) have been (rightfully worried for some time past by being flooded with clamorous petitions for copi.es of the new Acts which were passod during .the last session and are now in force. The (j-iov.ernment printers have been using every possible oxertion, but have not yet been able to" finish tlie work, owing to the enormous' bulk of tho statutes of 1882, which extend over between -.900 and 1000 pages. This making too bulky a single volume, it was proposed to issue two volumes; but then another difficulty arose, it. being found that another week or two would be taken up iti doing the extra binding, and so miiGh oxtra delay pujd be occasioned. Meanwhile the clamour ftr popies of the Acts continued unabated, and $t last in desperation it has been resolved .1.0 print the Acts in two volumes, with separate indices and paging, but to enclose the two in a single temporary cover, leaving recipients of copies to bind in two volumes if they ploase, This course having beeii adopted, it is hoped that the complete sets of Acts will be able to be issued; in about ten days' lime. The.ehso with whioh heavy bodies can be brought to'the surface of the water with suob a small amount of power applied is truly marvellous, and if (he principle can only bo carried out on a;large scale, iwith the untile success, the chances of vessels foundering at sea, if supplied with this apparatus,.will be reduced to a minimum, and the raising of Bunken vessels will be a certainty, instead of a great risk 'as at present. .The inventor believes it possible to', raise' small vesseli with no greater power than can be supplied with a forge bellows., the experiment will soon be triod as Mr Boss will soon have the-appliances ready to raise the Westport now lying about a mile ; from the Flaxbpuvne River in nine fathoms of waterj and he is silnguine of success, and if so the benefits, to ; shipowners and the mercantile community at large cannot bo over estimated. <
