Messrs Brandon, Shaw, nrnl Brandon. , Secbktaby [pro km,): Bbokebs; ' Messrs Ledger and Hiokson, Custom House Quay, Wellington. ' This property, lately known as tho" West AVanganni Coalfields" which jt is proposed to transfer to the new Company, is held by the proprietors under two leases from the Crown of 320 acres each for 30 years, at a total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty of 6d per ton, or one-fiftieth of the Coal raised. , It is situated in the West Wanganui Inlet, on tho North-West Coast of the Middlo Island, 100 miles from Nelson, 100 miles from Wellington, .10 miles South of Cape Farewell, and about 20 miles by road from Collingwood in Golden Bay. This inlet, or land-locked harbor, is the best on the West Coast, covering i distance of Bome9 miles in length by H in breadth, and-being acted upon b;, the sea only ib never subject to floods, while considering its contiguity to all the ventres of population, it is calculated that' screw steam colliers will be enabled to make from 8 to 10 trips per month. The Coal is good for all-round purposes, and is well-kbown in Wellington, IV aganui, Nelson, and other places, as the clemust and best "household." The field presents tho greatest advantages for an economical working; tin Coal measuring od an average about 3ft Gin thick, is the easiest to' work (on the '• Lougwall" system) for the production of largo Coal without slack or waste. The strata above the Coal is soft, and shafts can be put down without the uso of powder. There is abundance or mining timber close at hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, which go far to increase the value of tho mines. The present proprietors, in order to satisfy themselves that the Coal extended over a large area, lately, at considerable expense, put down several bore holes, which were attended with thorough, satisfactory reßults, and it is estimated that the property will yield 2 J million tons of Coal, or about 00 tons per day for 30 years. It ia' estimated that when the surface works are constructed, and tho Mine opened ont that 2000 tons of Coal can be raised per week, and put on board ship at a coFt of 7s per ton, and sold at from 13s to 15j per ton, leaving a proiit of say 6a per ton, or on 201)0 tons £6OO per week, The contiguity of the Mine to the propossd staiths, and'to the entrance of the Inlet, greatly enhances its value, as vessels will bo enabled to load and put to sea with despatch. ' , The statistics of 1881 show the increasing demand in New Zealand for coal, and the inability of our colleries to meet the same; although in that year 80,000 tons more were raised than in the previous year, the imports from Australia were also greater during the same period, audit! is said by those competent to judge, that if all tho Coal Mines at work and projected in Now Zealand were properly developed, there would still be a steady and increasing demand, Operations can bo commenced, and the Mine opened out, and Coal put,in the market without considerable expense, 'The surface works will be extended as tho out-put inoreasefi. It is therefore proposed that tho Company shall proceed to work the mine as soon as 1000 shares (irrespective of promo tere shares) have been subscribed for. The estimates given below, aro for the full completion of the works. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses incurred proving the lease and for their interest in the Mine. These shares will not be transferable until a dividond shall be paid on the subscribed capital. Over 300 snares have already been taken up by the presont proprietors, : The original report and estimates made bv Mr James Russell, Mining Engineer (who also carried ont the nrospecting works), may bo seen at tho offioes of Messrs Ledger and Hickson, Custom House Quay, Wellington.
