If the lands are not placed in the hands of the Government trustee they will pass away almost as soon | as the names of the owners are fixed by ito. Court.; I .think, the Natire. Act, I; do not think it a bad measure. It would ,be' welf for an officer of the Government to be Bent to explain its provisions to the Mnories, as they are ignorant about them, The natives here do not understand them. The European .members-have, one idea about it, and the Maori member one exactly contrary to theirs. Had this meeting been held at my place, and there being sufficient accommodation, I would have convened a general m'eaiirig;of native chiefs to consider these matters;' * v Retireti Tapihasa, -,..., Of Ketorua, Native Lands Court Alienor. THE TEETOTAL' SYSTEM IN MASTERTON. >' y (To the Editor.) : ' Monday, &optember 25. ijSiß,—Yesterday morning a traveller might have.been seen entering Masterion . After (baiting \m Jiorae, he .went in quest of refreshments, but imagine his surprise when he was refused at \ three hotels, the answer being the same—viz.: The barman is out, and got the key with' him. Finding entreaties'of no avail, he wss compelled to appeal to a sergeant of police. Now, sir, is it fair that a traveller should have to bunt after a constable before he can net refreshment ?j The "Good" Templarß may vaunt b'f the virtue of their township, but I'think they are going a little 100 far when they try to. deprive: a poor thirsty traveller of aiirink. li ,•;. '"' " Tkavelleu fkom Grevtown. [No doubt the case of the poor traveller who rode all the way from Greytown. was a hard.'one.-,-His thirst was evi- ..: dentlyof a character which could only I bo quenched by Imperial pints administered at intervals.' No doubt tea, water, or'milk acted on his system as a poison. We sincerely trust that he was .' able to console 'himself at the fourth hotel for the agony he must have endured at the first, second and third.— ;. Ed. W.D.] : COUNTY BOUNDABIES,.' ; • (To the Editor.) ; Sir,—l was pleased to notice in your report of a meeting of County East '.hat the question of amalgamation of Counties or a re-construc!ion of boundaries was brought up, and I also noticed that the; general, feeling of members present' was favorable to a North and South County. This is as it should bo, In my humble opinion the intersstd of the Masterton and' Castlepoiht Highway i Boards are so identical that it would be very desirable to unite the. northern halves of Counties East and West, for the better local government of the district. The Masterton and Castlepoint Boards, with. County North, could then and should work together with unity as one body j and with good men at the helm the ratepayers in County North would have all that could be ; desired, so far as local government is concerned, as given to ui by;the Highway Board and Counties Acts. I trust the repbrt'of the Committee will be favorable to such a re-con-struction, of boundaries'as suggested, by Messrs Booth and Buchanan at Saturday's meeting.:,,.., ■.;■■.■':.■ ~ ■■'.;'. lam, Ac, •■■■ '■'.. • ■-■ .Job Vile,
