The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1882. NORTH AND SOUTH.

The . influential ..meeting held: at the County Offices, Masterton, on Saturday last confirms the statement we made a few daya ago to the effect tliat though the union of the two existing Counties was the right solution of the present 1 difficulty, a north and south county would prove more popular.' |lf ■ tHe question were left to the leading public men of the district there would be a fair chance of a county amalgamation being obtained, but it has to be decided by the voices of the ratepayers, and too many local differences exist for us to hope that the latter will be prepared to take a broad view of the subject. Believing that a strong feeling, which it. is impossible to. change, exists in favor of two counties, we reluctantly abandon our advocacy of an immediate union and accept a north and south division of the district as the best practicable solution 'of the conflict of boundaries, so graphically described by Mr J. V. Smith at the late meeting, Opinions seem to differ as to the best means of giving effect; to the proposed changes, but no doubt the committee appointed will be able to ascertain the quickest and most effective modus operandi In the North we shall have little reason to regret the change in our County area, Not only, in the Forty Mile Bush, but also in the Whareama, there ; is practically for many years to come an unlimited amount of good land to open up and settle. Within the next five years the population and wealth of the proposed North County ought to be doubled, if not trebled. This County will indeed be a busy one, and if, as we confidently expect, able men are returned to its Council, its future, as contrasted with its past, will be a brilliant one., The Southern County is a comparatively settled district and the principal work of its Council will be more of a routine character. Still with men at its helm like Mr Booth we do not for a moment suppose that it will stand still, or that the County and Highway Boards, working hand in hand together, will find no .new country to open up and will be restricted to merely maintaining existing roads. There are solitudes in the southern as well as in the northern division of the Wairarapa, and the two Councils may with friendly, rivalry try to outvie each other in peopling them' with industrious settlers, If there is one thing more than another which will compensate those who have desired to see' One strong county established in the Wairarapa, it will be both Counties pulling together for the , benefit of the district as a whole, helping each other whenever occasion offers, and discarding all petty jealousies and pftsjudices, If this prove to be the case there will still be one Wairarapa, in which settlers, whether they live in the north, Eouth, east, or west portions of it, may take a pride and feel, an interest. When the proposed alteration of county boundaries is effected, we hope for some years at least the lines of our local districts will remain unaltered, as development rather than change will be the policy of all parts of the district. Some years hence no doubt the land marks may again require to be adjusted to suit the growth and distribution of population, Perhaps then when all outlying parts of tho Wairarapa are opened up and settled it will be found convenient to amalgamate all interests in one grand and populous county, Mr James Langdon of Tinui invites tenders for underbrushing 75 acres of bush at Waikororo near Mr Elder's land. bolder sold, a lew days ago, two thousand fat sheep, to 1 leading butchering firm at Wellington for £2OOO cash. We understand that more than one application is likely to be made in Masterton on behalf of frail men to prohibit publicans from supplying them with publicity t&theee cases because jt is very desirable that such persons} arid 1 their wives andrehtives should not be deterred by a fear 01 public exposure from taking advantage of the comparative safety which may be secured under the protection of the prohibitive o'außes of the Licensing Aot.
