V Secretary (pro lemj: ■ , Buokem: Messrs Ledger and Hiukson, Custom House Quay, Wellington. This property, lately kcown as the" West Wanganui Coalfields," which it is proposed to transfer to the new Company, is held by the proprietors under two leases from the Crown of 320 acres each for 30 years, at a total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty of 6d per ton, or one-fiftieth of the Coal raised. It is situated in the West Wanganui Inlet, on the North-Weflt Coast of the. Middlo Island, 100 miles froin Nelson, 160 miles from Wellington, 10 miles South of Capo Farewell, and about 20 miles by road from Collingwood in Golden Bay. This inlet, or land-locked harbor, is the best on the West Coast, covering i, distance of some 9 miles in length by 1J in breadth, and being acted upon bj the sea only is never subject to floods, while considering its contiguity to all the centres of population, it is calculated that screw steam colliers.will be enabled to make from 8 to 10 trips per month. < The Coal is good for all-round purposes, and is well-known in Wellington, wanganui, Nelson, and other places, as the cleanest and beat "household." : ■ for an economical working, the Coal measuring on an average about 3ft 6in thick, is the easiest to work (on the *' Longwall" system) for the production of large Coal without slack or waste. The strata above the Coal is soft, and shafts can be put down without the use of powder. There is abundance or mining timber close at hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, which go far to increase the value of the mines. The present proprietors, in order to satin, fy themselves that the Coal oxtended over' largo area, lately, at considerable expense' . put down several bore holes, which were attended with thorough satisfactory nsu and it is estimated that the property yield 2 J million tons of Coal, or about will tons per day for 30 years. It is pstimated that when the surface works ore constructed, and the Mine opened out that 2000 tons of Coal can be raised per week, and put on board ship at a cost of 7s per ton, and sold at from 13s to 153 per ton, leaving a profit of say 6s per ton, or on 20GO tons £6OO per week. The contiguity of the Mine to the proposed staiths, and to the entrance of the Inlet, greatly enhances its value, as vessels will be enabled to load and put to sea with despatch. The statistics of 1881 show the increasing demand in New Zealand for coal, and the inability of our collerie's to meet the same; although in. that year 80,000 to more were raised than in the previous year, the imports from Australia were also greater during the* same period, and it is said by those competent to judge, that if all the CoalMine» at work and projected in New Zea'and were properly developed, there would still bo & steady and increasing demand, Operations can be commenced, and the Mine openf d out, and Coal put in the market without considerable expense, The surface works will be extended as the out-put increases. It is therefore proposed that the Company slmll proceed to work the mine as soon as 1000 shares (irrcspectiveof promoters shares) have been subscribed for, The estimates given below, are for tho full completion of the works. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses inourred pioving the lease and for their interest in the Mine. These shares will not bo transferable until a dividend slmll bo paid on the Over 300 shares have already been taken up by tho present proprietors. The original report and estimates made by Mr Jameß Russell, Mining Engineer (who also carried out the orospccting works), may be seen at tho offices of Messrs I.edgcr and Hickson, Custom House Quay, Wellington.
