WANGANUI HIGH SCHOOL TROUBLES.
Wakoanui, September 19. • Charges, and counter charges made by the head and second master of the Boys' High School have been the subject of inquiry, yesterday and today, by the School 'Gommittoei-'and by a conference of the ' Committee'aud Education Board, The 'Committee occupied six hours in taking evidence, which went to show (bat the second ,master(Mr Steedman) was guilty of. gross .]n»ubordinate conduct towards ,hij;, superior,. : while Mr Frances (the head .master) was.-, greatly deficient hi. ;t'act and judgment. The report'of the'- Coramit'teV recommeeded that Mr. Frances receive three months' notice of the termination of Mb engagement, and that Mr Steedman receive instant dismissal, '•'he conference adopted tho report of the Committee, with a modification of Mr Steedman, that he be requested to send in hia resignation on or before the 25th instant; on receipt of hia resignation one month's salary to be paid to him in lieu of service. It was understood that it would be open to Mr Frances to apply again for appointment.
THE TRANSIT OF VENUS. ' Wellington, this day. Earl Kimberley has cabled to the Government that the American Government intend, sending a party to Now Zealand for the purpose of taking observations on the transit uf Venus, and asks that facilities would.be given to them to do so.
