This property, .lately known as the'! West Wanganui Coalfields," which it is proposed to transfer to the new Company., is held by the proprietors under two leases from the Crown of 320 aores each for 30 years, at a total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty of 6d per ton, or one-fiftieth of the Coal raised. It is situated in tho West Wanganui Inlet, on the North-West Coast of tho Middle Island, 100 miles from Nelson, IGO miles from Wellington, 10 miles' South, of Cape Farewell, and about 20 miles by road from Collingwood in Golden Bay. This inlet, or laud-locked harbor, ia the best on tho West Coast, covering i distance of some 0 miles in length by 1| in breadth, and being acted upon bj. the sea only is never subject to floods, while considering its contiguity to' all the centres of population, it is calculated that screw steam colliers will be enabled to make from 8 to 10 trips per month, . The Coal is good for all-round purposes, and is well-known in Wellington, Wanganui, Nelson, and other places, as tho cleanest and best" household." The field presents the greatest advantages for an economical working,' tho Coal measuring ;oh an average about 3ft 6in thick, is the easiest to work (on the ') Longwall" system) for the production of large Coal without slack or waste, Tho strata above the Coal is soft, and shafts can be put down without the use of powder. There is abundance or mining timber close/at hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, which go far to increase the value of the mines. Tho present proprietors, in order to satisfy. themselves that the Coal extended over ( large area, lately, nt considerable expend put down several boro holes, which were attended with thorough satisfactory resuns, and it is estimated that the property will yield 2| million tons of Coal, or about tons per day for 30 years. It is estimated that when the surface works aro constructed, and theMino opened ! out that 2000 tons of Coal can be raised per , week, and put on board ship at a cott of 7s per lon, and sold at from 13s to 15s per ton, [ leaving a profit of say (is per ton, or on 2000 tons £60(1 per week. The contiguity of the Mine to thepropossd 1 staitlis, and to the entrance of the Inlet, greatly enhances its value, as vessels will be enabled to load and put to sea with despatch.
The statistics of 1881 show the increasing demand in New Zeuland for coal, and the inability of our eolleries to meet the eanie; although in that year 80,000 tons more were raised than in the previous year, the imports from Australia were also greater during the same period, audit is said by those competent to judge, that if all the Coal Mines at work and projected in New Zealand were properly developed, there would still be a steady and increasing demand, Operations can be ppm'mejieed, and the Mine opened out, and Ooa.l put in the market without considerable expense, The surface works will be extended as tho out-put increases. It is therefore proposed that the Company shall proceed to work the mine as soon as 1000 shaves (irrespectiveof promoter! shares) have been subscribed for. The estimates given below, are for the full completion of the works. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses incurred pioving the lease and for their interest in the Mine, These shares will not be transferable until a dividend shall be paid on tho subscribed capital, Over 300 shares have alretvdy been taken up by the present proprietors. The original reporjand estimates made by Mr Jame3 Ijuos'elJ, Mining Engineer (who also carried out the orospccting works), may be seen at the oilKos of Mcssre Ledger and Hickson, Custom House Quay, Wellington.
