' i This property, lately known as the" West Wanganui Coalfields," which it is proposed to transfer to ! the new Company, is held by I tlit proprietors under two leases from the [Crown of 320 acres each for 30 years, ata total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty of fid per ton, or one-tiftibth of the Coal raised. . •■; ■ '■ -.' It is situated, in the West Wanganui Inlet, ] oil tho North-West..Coast;of the Middle' Island, 100 miles from Kelson,. 100 miles from Wellington, 10 miles South of Cape Farewell, and about 20 miles by roo>d from Collingwood in Golden Bay. . .' : ;'' ~.-''" This inlet, or land-locked harbor, is the beston the West Coast, covering distance of some 9 miled in length by \\ in breadth, and being acted upon. b$ the 7 s.ea only is; never; Bubject to floods, while considering its: contiguity to all the centres of population, it .is calculated, that ■■'screw, steam colliers will be enabled to make from Bto 10 trips per month, - The Coal is good for all-round purposes, and iswcll-taown in Wellington, Wanganui, Nelson, and other places,-as tho cleanest and best" household." ■•■; The field presents the greatest advantages for an economical working, the Coal measuring oh an average about Bft 6in thiok, is-thc easiest to work (on the ''■ Longwall" ■system) for'the" production of large Coal Without slack or waste. The strata abovo , the Coal is soft, and shafts can be put down Without the uso of powder. There is abundance or mining timber close at -hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, which go fnr to increase the value of theminra. The present proprietors, in order to satisfy themselves that the Coal extonded over;' large area, lately, at considerable expend' put down several bore holes, which were av tended with thorough satisfactory results, and it is estimated that the'proporty will yield 1\ million tons of Coal, or about tons per day for 30 years. .■,■-..- . It is estimated that when the surface' works are.constructcd, and the Mine opened out that 2000 tuns of Coal can be raised per week, and put on board ship at a coft of 7s per ton, ami sol I at from 13s to 16s per ton, , lcavii g a profit of say Gs per ton, or on 2000 tons £6OO per week, ; 'The contiguity of the Mine to thepropossd staiths, and to the entrance of the Inlet, greatly enhances its value, as vessels will re enabled to load and put to sea with despatch.
; The statistics of 1881 show the increasing demand in Now Zealand tor coal, and llio inability of our colleries to meet the same; although in that year 80,000 tons more were raised than in the previous year, the imports from Australia wero also greater during the same period, and it is said by those competent to judge, that if all the Coal Mines at work and projected iu New Zealand were proporly developed, thero would Btillbea steady and increasing demand, ,• -Operations can ,bo commenced, and the Mine opened out, and Coal put in tho market without considerable expense, The surface works will be extended as tho out-put increases'. It is therefore proposed that the Company shall proceed towoik the mine as soon as 1000 shares (iirespectiveof promoters shares), have been subscribed for. • The. estimates given below, ate for the full completion of the works. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses incurred piovingtbelcasoand for their interest in the Mine, Those shares will not be transferable until a divideud shall bo paid on the subscribed capital. Over 300 shares have already been taken up by the present proprietors. The-original report and estimates made by Mr James Russell, 1 Mining Engineer (who also carried out tho urospectmg works), may be seen at tho offices of Messrs Ledger and Hickson, Custom Houso Quay, Wellington.
