MASTERTON HIGHWAY DISTRICT. One portion of the Masterton Highway District is situated in Wairarapa East, and the other in Wairarapa West County, but undor the Counties Amendment Act, which has just become law, the Board can no longer reign in two counties. It follows, therefore, that either the Highway District must be broken up to suit the County Divisions, or the County boundaries' changed to meet the require ments of tho Highway District. We believe that the more convenient alternative will be to recast the County boundaries, and that the best solution of the difficulty will be the amalgamation of the two counties into one, a change which we have long advocated, If this be not agreed to, it might be desirable to form a northern county consisting of the Masterton and Castlepoint Highway Districts, and a southern county embracing the Tara-tahi-Carterton and the Featherston Highway Districts. The question is one of the first importance, and it is desirable that it should be fully and dispassionately discussed bofore any decision is arrived at, County East will probably take it up at its meeting on Saturday next, and every other local body in the district may be expected to follow suit. For the next month or two it will bo the burning question in the Wairarapa. We have not yet •received a copy of the Counties Amendment Act, but we understand that under its provisions an immediate change of tho character which we have indicated is imperative.
