This property, lately known as the "West Wanganui Coalfields," which it' is. proposed to transfer to the new Company, is held by the proprietors under two leases from the Crown of 320 acres each for 30 years, at a total rental of £32 per annum, and a royalty of 6d per ton, or one-fiftieth of; the Coal raised. It is situated in the West Wanganui Inlet, on the North-West Coast of the, Middle Island, 100 miles from Nelson, 160 miles from Wellington, 10 miles.South of Cape Farewell, and about 20 miles by road from Collingwood in Golden Bay, This inlet, or land-locked harbor, is the best on the West Coast, covering \ distance of Borne 9 miles in; length-by 1J in breadth, and being acted upon bj; the sea only is never subject, to floods, while considering its contiguity to all the centres of population, it is. calculated that screw steam colliers will be enabled to mike from 8 to 10 trips per month, ! The Coal is good for all-round purposes, and is well-known in Wellington, Wanganui, Nelson, and other places, as the cleanest and best "household." '
for an economical working, the Coal measuring oa an average about 3ft 6in thick, is the easiest to work (on the " Lqngwall" system) for the production of large Coal without slack or waste. The strata above the Coal is soft, and Bhafts can be put down without the use of powder, There is abundance or mining timber olose at: hand, and plenty of fresh water and other natural advantages, which go for to increase the value of the mines, The preßent proprietors, in'order to satisfy themselves that the Coal extended over large area, lately, at considerable expense pat down several bore holes, which wera tended with thorough satisfactory resu atand it is estimated that the property Its, yield 2J million tons of Coal, or about will tons per day for 30 years. i It is estimated that 'when the surface works are constructed, and the Mine opened out that 2000 tons of Coal can be wised per week, and put on board ship at a coft of 7s per ton, and sold at from 13s to 15s per ton, leaving a profit of say 6s per ton, or on 2000 tons £6OO per week, ; The contiguity of the Mine to thepropossd staiths, and to the entrance of the; Inlet, greatly enhances its value, as vessels will be enabled to load and put to sea with despatch.
demand in New Zealand for coal, and the inability of our colleries to meet the eame; although in that year 80,000 tonß more were raised thnn in the previous year, the imports from Australia were also greater during the j same period, and it- is said by those', competent to judge, that if all the Coal Mines at work and projected in New Zealand were properly developed, there would still be a steady and increasing demand, Operations can be commenced, and the Mine opened out, and Goal put in the market without considerable expense. The surface works will be extended as the out-put increases, It is therefore proposed that the Company shall proceed to work the mine as soon as have been subscribed for. The estimates given below, are for the full completion of the works. The proprietors will reserve to themselves 1300 paid-up shares for expenses incurred pioving the lease and for their interest in tho Mine. These shares will not be transferable until a dividend shall be paid on the subscribed capital. Over 300 shares have already been taken up by the presont proprietors. The original report and estimates made by Mr James Russell, Mining Engineer (who also carried out the Drospecting works), may be seen at the offices of Messrs Ledger and Hickson, Custom Houbo Quay, Wellington.
