The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1882. THE MASTERTON MUNICIPAL CONTEST.

We remarked yesterday that the probabability was that the retiring Councillors, Messrs Perry, MoOardle, and Heron, would be re-elected. To-day we have to announce that our anticipation lias been realised. , The result , [of the poll, if it has any significance I at all, means that the ratepayers en--1 dorse- the borrowing policy of the I Council. Mr Perry, who is person- | ally the most popular man out of the I five candidates, only secured a third l( place at the poll, and was closely pressed i[ by Mr J. H. Coreett, an enthusiastic ji borrower.' Had Mr Perry been in I ifavor of a loan he would undoubtedly [ iave headed the list. The premier I j position of Mr Heron on the poll gives | us entire satisfaction. He has been a hardworking though silent member of 'the Council, and on the loan question, as on all others, he has displayed his customary common sense. Mr McOar. die can afford to be well contented i with his second place, and Mr Corbett, though unsuccessful, has every reason to be proud 6f ! the number of votes , which he secured. Mr Gray, consideri ing the fact tlmt he did not desire reelection, cannot complain of his score of 116. He could, no doubt, .'have ; materially increased it had .he sought , to :do so.' We trust that now the Council is reconstituted it will set to •• work in a sensiblo manner to give ( effect to its loan proposals. The , schedule of roads may now be considered ' a settled : question. But the i -Council should reconsider the itein for ' 'a steam, fire engine, the.period during . yhich- the loan : is to. be expended, i ami some of the conditions named i for repayment .... and for interest. ' It is unnecessary- to ■ submit the two j latter to a public ! vote/ and : it j . was au .oversight ; on'the part j of. the i Council to bring them forward without I more mature deliberation. If a loan 1 be riot - carried' 1 it 'will he the fault of . members of the Council who aire favorable jto borrowing, but who are not j sufficiently practical to agree among themselves as to the' 'terms on which it should be, raised. - Wo believe that if Cra ,Gapper and McCardle could •. be induced in the public interests to j
