A few chains up the road mud was struok; good soft bottom, plenty of color/ Hero a halt was made, owing to tho discovery of the remains of a navvy in the mud. The Engineer descended and picked epthe pieces,- consisting of a long-handled •novel. The other portion was right out of sight. Further en route, mud, water, and roadway wore somewhat mixed, but the expedition was successful in getting through, after many pious ejaculations and constructing a few dams in the worstplftces, Once again in safety in Queen-street, the journey was more rapidly made Kurupuni-ward6. .At Princess-street, Cr Perry awaited the \m cession with a large hamper •of-aaußage.-, l.lack puddings, &c, which were duly disposed of, and the party went onward . refreshed.—'N.B.: This is ; sarkas'uv Arrived at ihe Public Hall' the procession was greeted by the •trains of" the Kurupuni Public Baud playing " See the Conquering Hero(n) Comes." But he didn't come. Here a deputation of the Hall Directors, headed by their spokesman', requested the Mayor to lay the celebrated corner stone in the triangle as a site for a Borough lamp. This was gracefully acceded to, and a start made again as far as Solway House and then' back, via Chapel-street. Arrived opposite the Hohool, the procession halted and received a short address from the headmaster, bestowing in return a blessing on the assembled scholars. Passing along Renallstreet, the Upper Plain Road was duly reached, where an attempt was made on the lives oi the pany by an insurance agent they met. Here the Mayor took an affecting leave of his colleagues and returned to ptepure- for their proper reception, The rest went along the Upper Plain round Aknra road and Lincoln road, ihence slung. Bentley and Villastreets by,tin- outages, and back to Hallstreet, wheie an ovation awaited them, and thus ended the memorable ride of the Civic Fathers.
