GREYTOWN V, WELLINGTON, ' The first S(M¥®i l ®nß of the Grey/ town football club lett Greytown by the £^@P lft y4fllfefesie& tie Wellington Club in llie cMengo cup coiltest, and the latter to try conclusion with a second Alteon'-of the same olub; The' weather for several days previous had been unfavorable a - for football exercise, M ..secretary of the ABsociation telegraphed to 'the Greytown-. secretary that the Newtown ground was flooded on Friday, and that it was advisable to postpone the match, but as the' 1 weather then appeared to be breaking, the Greytown committee decided togo, rain or shine, and between 45 and aO tickets weri taken at the Greytown station by the footballers and their friends. During thi usual stoppage at Featherston, both teams were weighed, the average of the first beingllst 91b, and the second lOat 121bi On arriving in Town both teams were taken to the Oxford Hotel, where a lunoh was provided for them. A snsoial traiiJ then oonveyed them to the Newtown ground. The visitors were stripped pnnotual to the time. 2 p.m., but were
kept waiting nearly an hour by the nooarrival of seme of the home team. The ground was rather sloppy, and cut up' terribly wherever a sorimmage was', formed, and the appearance of the' players when they stood up after a 1 tumble was ludicrous in the extreme. The home team were very confident of winning, as thev had a first class fifteen being strengthened by four or five of the college team, among whom was G. H. Smith, who played for Masterton in the cup match against the Athletics, and to whom they owed their victory, as he kioked the goal. The visitors had a very strong team, and the way in whioh the game was contested shewed they were able to give a good acoount of themselves. It was deoided to play two spells of thirty minutes each, Ingley kioking off for Greytown, the ball was kept in the home team' quarters for a good spell, when from a tough scrimmage close to their goal line, F. Tully managed to seonro a try for Greytown, Fairbrother was entrusted with the kiok but failed to get the ball behind the goal line. During the remainder of the spell the play was close to the Wollington goal line, they having to touch'down" two or three times, In the seoond spell the visitors again worked
the b»ll up to their opponent's quarters, 1 but the home team got a well formed ■ loose scrimmage on the way, and the j slippery nature of the ground made it a matter of impossibility for the visitors to stand against them, and the ball was carried down, and a try was secured for Wellington, from whioh G. H. Smith kicked a vary pretty goal. From this to f the end of the pame both sides worked r very hard, but without scoring. Wei- j hngton winning by one goal to one try. The usual cheers were given on both sides, when the players stripped for the cup march, The Wellington team looked '• the biggest lot,, their Firth and Thompson towering aboya the . rest, but for j uniformity of size and general physique i the Greytown team were decidedly the I besi .
