The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1882. THE WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD.
We have.been accustomed to credit , very many of'the members of the Wellington Education Board with a spirit ,of .; wisdom and: understanding, but judging from their last : meeting they mst' have gone off their heads a little.' |We called attention yesterday to the feet that they had thrown discredit on ;the Masterton Town Lands Trust, and that they had done this so effectually that the N.Z. Times Whs able to announce that the ■Trust, in consequence of. a difficulty with its banker, was unable to meet' its engagements to pay the""Board. MOO. We have-pscer-tainedthat the said '£4oo Has-'been lying at theßank at Masterton £d. the credit of the Trot- waiting foif'the Board since February last;'_This;being' the case it in pretty evident tha't'the: Boai;d. has unjustly slandered the Masterton Trust, and it is "the .BoW itself tbafcrnust be put on its defence'. It is asserted -in Masterton that the delay has arisen from the laches, of a certain Messrs Slow and Bideawhile,' who are in the employ of the Board, and we trust now an inquiry has.been •inßtituted.blame will be sheeted home -to-the culprits whoever they may be,' and that if they happen to be the I employees of the Board no attempt |;\yill be made to hush >he matter up. Qur faitli in the Board would not have heen-So rudely shakeirif, atthesame meeting, another instance of palpable foolishness had not occurred. 'There is a vacancy in the Masterton school for'a pupil teacher and two eligible applicants who have been educated at the sohool and reside in its neighborhood were; candidates for the appointment. What.did the Board do 11t selected'a" chilil 'from Carterton for the office, a' young lady, who did'.not; we believe, even apply forthe situation. Of course the Board should be'aware, at any rate a moment's reflection would' have .brought a'conviction to its mind, that the Masterton School Committee wis very unlikely to accept a palpable' snpb of'this kind, and that in making such an appointtDentJt.placed.its unhappy favorite between two ijres/ and. brought itself unnecessarily' into collision with Jhe.committee of the principal schqoiofthe Wairarapa, There insufficient intelligence among the niembers of that Committee to' detect piich palpable blunders "as the Board appears' to ; be perpetrating and to. recent thera.i. We.do not'object to the members of the Board sitting at WeiJington acting like little' Gods, all-care--less, of: the small .mankind who;constitute School Committee's so.long as they combine • with' their' ex-cathedra utterances/a reasonable amount of con>' Won sense.' : We don't kno\y which of
the:raembW%i; responsible, for: the 'particular and' inexcusable, foolishtieas' M which we have alluded, but W -feel certain that it will not be allowed' 1 ' to' pass muster. ":"'.:".: ~ZZ~:."".'"
