THE GLOSSOGRAPH.
jy„-'. Irort' gives an account of " another ■ i addition to. the many Bcientifio wonders of ?;■ recent years. Herr A. Gentilli, of.Vienna has invented an. instrument namediiby ■ him the' gloasograph,'-. consisting of an ingenious combination of delicate levers • and blod.es, which placed upon the tonguo .•and lip's.ind.under the nostrils of the :. lyMker are vibrated by the motements of > AVnotmrn and' the breath flowing from • thoTatter.-.The vibrat'on is transmitted to pencils, which'transcribe the several .-: signs produced by the action of the tongue ■■ add the breath from the nostrils upon a strip of paper moved by mechanical ".arrangement. Similar to "shorthand, a •r special system of writing which may be ■-'■: fitly be termed glossography, is produced based upon the principle of syllable con- ■ - itructioc and combination of consonant's. It is especially suitable for. those lan- .. guages the orthography of which differs " ileaet from the phonetic record of .the ■ apparatus, The instrument is self-acting L in the fullest'sense. Moreover, its application involves as lit.tle fatigue to the speaker as severe attention on the part of :the person transcribing. In reporting iiroceedings in Parliament or courts of aw, it is not necessary that the! speaker ?. should use tho apparatus, himself. Any* -■body may articulate it.by repeating ill a low voice tho wordß of a speaker, whioh is sufficient for recording the signs. The glosßo?raph may be 'recommended to ■ those' orators whose. efforts to be heard -are consistently ignored by reporters, and who will' thus be enabled by simply adjusting the.instrument under their nose ... to report thejr own speeches in spite of these objectionable persons. Seriously ipeakiog, ; ..play an'important in >•. lb* n«r future." ■..■.-■ ■•:•;'-•••.
