MASTEKTON V GRBYTOWN. ■ Teams representing theabove ' towns playud a matoh at the former" place on Saturday. The time for kicking off had been fixed for 3 o'clock but through the late arrival on the ground of several of the Masterton men, some delay took place, and eventually the match started with two makeshifts in the latter team, the picked men not turning.up, The following are the names of the playersMasterton . J. Perry (back), W. Perry, and .Ellis (half-backs),. Morrison, Hawke, autl F, H, Smith [quarter-backs), H. a'nd J.' Bannister,W.Harvey, McLachlan, Welch,. McKenzie (Captain), Wardell, Smith, and Ford. Greytown : Day,(back), Ronaldson, and Bidwill, (half-backs), Hirnchberg, Palmer, Say well, (quarter-backs), Beard, Desmond, Maguire, Udy (captain), Webster, Tocker, Somerville, Cameron, and Humphries, The ground was in very damp, slippery condition, ornamented by several inviting pools of water, intowhioli, playerson either sideoccasionally floundered.' After a few minutes play, some of the men presented an extraordinary, appearance, their faces, hands, and unitorms being covered with mud, to the great amusement of the spectators, uf 'Vliom there wove o limitod numbor .prcso includin® a few ladies. The game was played in four Bpells of 20 minutes each, and from first to last, though the Masterton men worked gamely and some of them with groat skill and smartness, the Greytown team had all the advantage, and won the game with one goal and two tries, having also forced their opponents down five times, The goal was the cause of some angi-y feeling on the part of the Masterton men,, aa after some tough scrimmaging near the goal line, the ball was forced outof.bounds, and on being thrown in, Hirschbcrg ae< cured it, and ran, but was called back by both Greytown and Masterton players, on the ground that the ball was not thrown in straight, Hirschbergj however, very properly kept running, and as no oho made the least attempt to stop him, (the Masterton men having stood still at the cry "bring it back"), touched the ball down under the goal line. Masterton disputed the right to the try, but Greyi own insisted it was a perfectly, legal one, aa there was no reason why the ball should be brought back, and their umpire and the referee _ gave them the verdict, Konaldson kicktng an easy goal. In this connection we would suggest to umpires the necessity of watching the game a little more closely, and not leave to onlookers or the players the task of deciding every point in the game. If the umpires were up to their duties, a misunderstanding suoh as the above could not have occurred) and much unpleasantness and dissatisfaction would be spared to both successful and non-successful players, For Greytown, the whole of the forwards played splendidly, the great strength of Desmond and the toughness and aotiviiy of IJdy, Beard, Cameron, and Humphries were always conspicuous, Saywell and Bonnldson in their places would be hard to beat; in fact, the whole team would render a good account of itself against any fifteen it faced. The tries were gained by Saywell, Dosmond, and Hirschberg. For Masterton, W. Harvey, Morison, H, Bannister, McLachlan, J. Hawke, H. P. Smith, and J. Perry were most conspicuous, the two latter beiner frequently applauded by the spectators. The usual cheers were given at the conclusion of the match, and victors, vanquished, and witnesses left the field.
