raonts in this town have of ljite been apparently very active in their endeavors to spread and popularise the doctrines which they teach, j One of their latest efforts Ims been to whip in the clergy by requesting Ministers to preach special sermons on temperance. It is gratifyingi to find that there is so pulpit and its utterances Wto prompt such a request, but we fear preaching and lecfcurel go; but a small way towards making'a sobei people, The individual who is wont t( over-indulge in alcoholic stimllants ii ipt to get more impressive sermon rom the wife of his bosom than an; le is likely to obtain in church, 01 jven if he be spared this ordeal th leadach *' the sic! It wouldj-be better for the promoters of temperance to/endeavor toj provide social re-union's at which it jwould be possible foj'joung men to enjoy themselves without having tho temptation stimulants put in their way.- Ifihey. 'for instance established a social club or coffeehouse at which young inen could •obtain a reasonable amount of comfort and social intercourse they would probably effect more real good jthan they can possibly obtain by lectures, addresses, and sermons. It would be very easy to attempt an experiment of this kind in Masterton, and if it were done on a common sense rbasis, if there were no straining after an artificial moral standard, if no| pressure were brought to bear, to improve those who at present seek only for rational recreation, the venture would in all probability bo a success; In other towns where coffee rooms have been opened, and conducted on the lines we have indicated, they have lieen very popular, and we fail to see that they should not bo so in this towii.
