IMITATION FEET AND SANDALS.
Among the strange freaks of the lost Vienneso Carnival was the adoption by several of the Kaiserstailt'B leadiijg beauties of imitation feet and sandals, as accessories to mythological or classical costumes, flaying indued flesh-colored tights provided with thin soles;' these ladies committed their delicate extremities to the manipulation of skilled artists, \yho deftly painted thereupon counterfeit presentments of toes, sandals, and laces, all complete, It appears that" the pretty wife of an eminent Viennese historical painter had chosen the dress, of a/jtfatersprite wherein to attend Jhe;i ! o sennas Ball,' and solicited her. talented husband's aid to ' make up' her feet in tbe manner indicated. Ho consented; but, being of a jealous disposition, prompting him to be chary of enhancing his. wife's natural oharms by adventitious mean.s.he put off the foot-painting operation until, the.last moment. ..When, however,"the carriage was at the io% and the watersprite's toilet completed' in all respects but one, heseized brush and palette, and addressed himself, seemingly m feverish haste to his task hurried his wife off to the ball as soon as her mimic feet jfere ready, without giving her time tn inspect them, On' entering the gailylighted ball-room, the lady cast a glance at her husband's artistic achievments. Her horror may be imagined wjien.she per-; ceived that the pink silk tights in. which her dainty feet were imprisoned had been admirably illuminated by his master hand with horrible representations of chilblains bunions and corns, only too tree to nature; That night she danced not, but 'sat! sadly; in a corner, hiding her travestied 1 feet: under her chair as faeßt she might.
