The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1882. PARTIES IN THE HOUSE.

It will be the fault of the Ministry if any serious opposition arises to overthrow them during the present session. There are at present virtually five parties in the House.- The strongest is that, which comprises the members of the Cabinet and their old followers. Next comes the moderate members of the Opposition as led by Mr Montgomery and Mi'Macandrew, After, there is a mixed lot of young members who have not as yet settled down as followers of any particular political leader. Then there are two sets of irreconcilables—the one which follows Sir George Grey, and the other which has not as yet discovered anyone hot and strong enough to lead it. .As time goes on the smaller sections of the House will no doubt become absorbed in the larger ones.' The Government will probably succeed' in assimilating with their party the young members who are at present holding aloof fr.om party ties. Such members cannot at once be expected to respond like veterans to either the Ministerialist or Opposition whip, When they have learnt their Parliamentary drill they will fall into their places readily enough, but for the present they, will bear but little handling, The Opposition, to be successful, has to draw into its ranks the t.vo batches of irreconcilables. If it insists upon admitting< them on its own terms, the process of amalgamation will be a slow one. If, ■on the other hand, it lets men like Sir George Grey or'Mr Holmes dictate the conditions of union, its future mil not be an enviable one. We hope that the Opposition,; as organised by Messrs Macandrew and Montgomery, will survive, and that the former will discipline his followers, By this means only, it is likely to-be serviceable to the country, and at some future time, when the necessity for a change of Ministry arises, be able to present & set of men to the .country who will'be . worthy of confidence. Before the end of the session we may expect to see the' five parties now in [the House reduced to three, but not to two, because the section headed by Sir George Grey is very unlikely to give in its adherence to either the Ministry or the Opposition,
