Blenheim. May 22. A digger named Sanntel Ballard committed suicide in the Unamututu Valley yesterday. He was found stcetchod on his lied with a gun between his legs and a stick with which he had pulled the trigger. The shot -entored his chest, and death must have heen instantaneous, The following letter was found in his pocketbook :—" My dear friends,—l am heartsick of this world. I cannot live in it any linger; my enorgy is exhausted, I cannot work, I cannot rest: there' is one -thnt knows why. Good-bye a 11,—5.8." A slip of paper, containing thp following address, was found between Ilia legs : " W. Gavd, Donald McLean street, Nowiown, Wellington. RAILWAY ACCIDENT NEAR DUNEDIN. Dunedin, May-22. A a crossing between Tawa' and Port Chalmers, the northern express this morning ran into a cart belonging, to-a • Ohinaman. John had left his cart on the crossing whilst he went to shut the railway gate', and in the meantime a train came along. The horse was killed and the cart knocked lo pieces, but-the engine was only slightly damaged, and the train was delayed only for ten minutes. ■ THE CANTERBURY BURGLARS. Christchuroh, May 22. . Reports of burglaries still come in. .Several have occurred in tho country districts, and on Sunday night three men attempted to break into Mr Matson's house at Papauui, and were firod on by the inmates. Nothing more has been hoard of tho matter, however.
