CAPTURE OF MAORI CRIMINALS,

DESPERATE STRUGGLE BETWEEN CONSTABULARY AND NATIVES.

Au, KLANE, May 19. The Native Minister, ascertaining that Pekora and Epiha had attended Tawhiao'a meeting at Whatiwhatihoe, instructed Colonel Reader to take steps for their arrest, and he directedthe Auckland police accordingly, It was afcertained that these Natives intended going back to the Upper Thames country through some of the Waikato settlements, and Sergeant MoGowan, in charge' c-f. the ■ Waikato sub-district, received instructions to effect their arreßt at all hazards.' He placed sentries on nil the roads,- but instead of coming through Hamilton or Cambridge, as expected, the two. Natives went down to Waipa by canoe, after staying a night at William Barton's settlement. Hearing they were at a settlement below Barton's, Sergeant MoGowan took, ten constables by steamer up to the settlement, and after a desperate hand-to-hand struggle with about thirty Natives, captured Pakora and Epiba without bloodshed, and they were then ttken to Hamilton. Some doubt as to the identity of Epiha being experienced, Mir Bush, R.M., was telegraphed to come and indentify him, When that is done the' offendeas will be brought on to Auckland,
