CORRESPONDENCE.
I'HE ALTHUTKW OF BOOSDA-: RIBS. MABTEBTOB AND OA.S : (C TLEPOINT HIGHWAY DISTRICTS.
. To The; Editor.;/./ ■ Siß.—Conaidering that. the prppoeal to ■ alter the boundaries of the above districts originated' from the MastertonBoard, and that Mr Meredith was a prime mover in the matter, the proceedings of that body and the gentleman above named on Saturday last, strike one as being somewhat peculiar. In December last delegates from the Boards interested, and the Wairarapa East County very fully discussed the question of boundaries, and I feel Bure many people Imagined all was, settled*, so far .as the Highway Boards were concerned, But it turnß out otherwise, andjfor.wEat reason 1 Simply because the 'MasteHon Board cannot agree respecting.the _ adjustment ot Ward boundaiies. It "is to be regretted that Mr Meredith did not propound and make public a plan to' arrange the Wardß of his "district, at the Bame time that he mooted the Bubject of the alteration of district boundaries, One thing I give Mr :Meredith credit for. It ia that he has demonstrated very dearly indeed by figures that the l Blairlogie Boad is of but little or no value, especially to the Castlepoint ratepayers, and that there is only a very small amount of trafllc on it even during the most favorable season of the year, : Only think, ye ratepayers, that on this line of road duringfour mouths 670 posts 9000 ft. timber, and 9 tons ot goods have been conveyed. ■ I hope for. the sake ot the road in question that the figures are inaccurate. Can Mr Meredith in the face of this, hisowu calculation, with any.Bhow of reason ask tho Castle Point Board.to expend money oh a line of road used so little ? As a Castle Point ratepayer lam obliged to the Warden of No. 6 Ward for his calculations and comparisons of traffic on the Bluirlogie, and Mungapakeha lines of road. The information should be of some value to the Wardens of the Caßtle Point District and I hope they , will profit by it, and spend their funds on a line, of road where there is a reasonable amount of traffic; and not on one which; only benefits a few settlers in another Highway District.
Mr Meredith's statement that " the metalling near Kaumingi will only last two years" is also valuable. What a confiding individual the contractor who gave this information must be. Ifl mistake not, this same contractor is bound to use the best metal procurable, and ii there is any in the vicinity that will last longer'than the period mentioned, I trust the Overseer of the Castle Point Board will insist on it being put on the road. I am, &c.' t A Castle Point Ratepayer.
