The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, MAY 15, 1882. A SANGUINARY SOCIETY.

One of our local institutions, the Masterton Debating Society, in, as. we trust, a- temporary fit of Radical oxj überance, has displayed vory decided Nihilistic symptons. At its late meeting it was shown that the crime and misery of the world was undoubtedly due, not as is generally supposed, to a want of confidence in Wolfe's Avomatio Schnapps but to the land monopolists of the old world and of the new, and that the nationalisation of land system would bring about a Paradise on earth such as even that benefactor of Mankind, Professor Holloway, has nevor dreamt of, It was, however, objected to the new cure-all, save-all, and universal panacea, that it was inpracticable that the money to purchase land for nationalisation could never be found by any State; This difficulty d|d not daunt the boldest and ablest advocate of the movement. This Rupert of the debate proposed that the State should not buy the land but take it, that it should rob existing landlords of their properties, that in the interests of suffering humanity the State should become a colossal thief and a gigantic togue It was admitted that the work of epoliatiou could not be accomplished without revolution and without bloodshed, but what of that? In such a cause the end justified the means I Our broad acres having been duly manured with the life-blood of their present objectionable occupants, would be all themorofit for being leased to. the promoters of land nationalisation,' All this may seem very ; absurd, still sentiments of this character; were expressed solemnly and Seriously, and the majority of the meeting wnich listened .to them calmly and quietly confirmed by their vote the confiscating

and sanguinary proposal submitted to them. We do not suppose that ifcjvill be necessary for the Government to further augment the police force, for in spite of the ferocious character of the late gathering, we believe that, the members of the Society, however bloodthirsty they may be in debate, are law abiding citizens and would not injure a %• The incident however is curious as shewing what tlio extreme views of so-called advancep thinkers lead up to, and what comes of reading sensational pamphlets like" land Oh." It is to be hoped that for the present we have heard the last of tlie nationalisation of land theory in this district,

Bennett, and F. Fairbrother choosing sides for a scratch match, the latter scoring t\vo goals to thoir opponent's two tries. Owing to want of practice the Carterton Club do not find themselves capable of meeting the Masterton Club nn the 24th insfc., but hope to try events with them before long —following. their challenge. Art seems to flourish in Masterton. In Mr Chinchen's window may be seen two woter-colordrawings of feminine loveliness by a promising local amateur, and on the opposite aide of the street in tho window of Messrs Schroder and Hooper a fine oil painting of that grim warrior Titokowaru attracts the attention of the passer by, The latter picture is by Mr T' Donnelly, who possesses, evidently, considerable talent as a portrait painter. A match for £25 arising out of the late meeting of the Wairarapa Jockey Club took place on the Taratahi Race Course on Saturday afternoon commanding an attendance of between 60 and 70 of those interested- in sporting matters in the Valley, Mr' T. When the flag dropped, Ireland's Liberator had some" what the better of the start.' Matipo seemed to go stiff before coming into the straight, and Driscoll landed his mount an easy winner' by nearly two lengths, Money seemed to change hands freely on the event,

The first difficulty in the coming session is expected to be the Pilliet Episode We must ape the mother country and Mr Pilliet has undertaken the Bradlaugh role, That he will take his seat in the House there is but little doubt, that lie will be ultimnfely ejected is equally certain, but in the interval the radicals will have a war dance.

.A paper has been published proving very satisfactorily that the main 1 asency whioh keeps clear the channels of tidal river is not the run of the tide passing up and down them every twelve hours, but the upland or fresh _ waters whioh pass down them at the period of low-tide, more or less aided by the oozing out of the salt water which 1 may have soaked into the banks while oovered with the tide.
