THE INDIAN BOX-TRICK.
Peter Lamb belongs to the Arion Club, and one night he sentjaround to the clubroum a long narrow box and a lot of rope. Some of the fellows got examining the box, and wondering what it meant, before Peter came, and one of them found that one end of the box was moveable, and that the scrow-heads, which appeared tp hold it tight|y in its plapp \veye shams. So a lot of thorn got to worjc, and tab ing off the sham screw-heads, inserted some genuine Berews, which held the end in firmly. When Peter camo around, he said that a friomlof his had taught him how to do tho Indian box-trick, and he was going to give im exhibition to the club that evening. He asked a couple of fellows to satisfy themselves that tho box was secure and they said that they were certain it was,
"Now," said Peter, "you put me in there and tie the lid down firmly with the rope, and the whole crowd of yp,u go out of the room fp,r fjifeeji mmutoS,' and I'll bet you a sovereign I'll ho out of the box."
So Peter got in, and they fixed the rope and naked him if it was all right, and he said it was, and the crowd left and went over to the drug store, On their way up the stairs, as they came back they heard Bompbpdy kicking against some boards, and using the most frightful language in a suppressed voice. They entered the room, and petceived that tho noise came from Petor's box.
The oonjuyor heard thorn, and savagely demanded that they Bhould untie tho rope, They did bo, and kicking off tho ■lid, Peter leapod up, dashed to the window, thrust his head out, and for a minute or two gasped for breath, When he had fully recovered, be seized a poker, banged the box into splinters, and heavod it out in the back yard,
Then Mr Jones said to him; " Didn't get out, hoy ?" No answer from the Magician, who sat on a chair in the corner, looking mad.
" How do, yqu do that Indian trick ?" asked Jones.'
Silence from the wizard. , " Does the Indian do it in the same 'way as you do ?"
Scornful silence from the preatidigita' teur followed.
" I don't see anything about the trick any more wonderful than any ether trick."
Then Peter got up, and going dose to Jones, and shaking his flat in Jones' face, said, in a quiet biit determined voice: " You mean, sueaking, mutton headed idiot! I believe you fastened up the end of that box i and, if I knew it for pertain, I'd ram you full of powder, and blow you from hero to Peru.—"
Ho then sent in, his resignation, and and now he is studying up some new variety of legerdemain.
