CASTLEPOINT DISTRICT.
(from our own correspondent, ) . May 9th. Many and various rumours still circulate iielative tq the qatastrophe qt the Whareama Jerry, but as you liavo already published them it is needless tq repeat them. There is an opinion that the inquest was held somewhat hurriedly, and ti)4 if lflore tiirfe had been given other evidence thaq that obtained might have been forthcoming, The police "are supposed to be taking all necessary steps in the matter.
btock tliroughoufc (he district look remarkably well, and as there js an abundanpe pf fepd, tljey shoukj stand the winter wel), A large quaqtjty of grass soed has been this auturai), and the work of sowing it is all bi(t completed. The seasoq lijy bcpn an exceptionally favourable one for this work, Mild showery weather has fallen to our lot lately, and that sure harbinger ot winter (here) mud, is showing itself, and it is Feared that coach traffio must soon cease. I no election of a member for tlie' County Council iu the place of Mr F. Maunsell, resigned, is not exciting much interest. Mr J. TVilliama, of Tiraumea,. as been asked to come forward, and" ltrhv o .?-^ 0 "' 0 request, there is but little doubf of his being returned; • A Mflanoy occurs in the Hjgliwav Board consequent upon Mr Burling losing his seat through non-attendance.! Mr Murray, or uahanga, is spoken of as a candidate, biijce Mr Armstrong's death the northern portion of the disti'iot has, for all praotjoal purposes, had no representative, aud as a very large proportion of rates accrue from it, it is very desirable that it should;. Evory year the necessity for a metalled road from Kaumingi to Cashpoint is becoming more urgent, and until it is done there js little or no hope of the resources of this large district being properly developed. The question is where to get the money, A special rate would provide a small amount, and a county rate would also provide some, but from both these sources combined the amount would be a mere bagatelle. / v.-. - - Of late our local Justices have had quite a busy time of it, tlife number of drunks sat upon being quite to utterly numerous even in Tenui-thal stronghold of Bacchus. The hotel rom whence these inebriates come is no&spoken of as being very well conducted ol late, and certainly
i the cumber of lodgers in Constable Darby's look-up lend color to the report. The palings would have looked bottov bad they been nailed on perpendicularly! The rabbits I The cry is; " Still they come 1" Station owners are about to try poisoned grain to check the peet, and there is every reason to bolievo jliat it' can be used with good effect, even thoid® the rabbits, comparatively not numerous.
The Castlepoint Harbor Board has taken the initiatory steps towards obtaining funds for the erection of a boat jetty, by asking the Government to place a sum of money on the estimates, Our representatives in Parliament have also been requested to give the matter their attention.
Mr Stillborn is progressing with his road contract near Mr Peach'B property. I am glad to notice his ideas of road for* mation are not limited to working with pick and shovel, but that he is using a plough and scoop with good effeot, The Castlepoint and Masterton Highway Boards appear to hold different opinions respecting the size of a oulvert at Cabbage-tree Creek, on the Uriti line of road, and the former Board, I notice, decline to pay a provisioned subsidy until the culvert is enlarged. As the Castlepoint Board is the body liahlp fpr thp repairs to this work, they are perhaps right in insisting that it should he executed to its satisfaction.
