A NOVEL ACTION,
c Napier, this day. ■ A local agent of the Mercantile Bankruptcy Gazette, for publishing Under the heading of bankruptcy a asoiUi arrangement with a debtor, has been threatered with proceedings for £'soo damages on tlio ground that arranging deed does not come within bankruptcy clause. The usual bankruptcy, notice has been published by the clerk of the district court in the local papers.. THE AUCKLAND LEVANTER. Auckland, this day. Superintendent Thomson proceeds to Australia on Tuesday for the purpose of bringing back Hargis. It appears that the defaulter's Adelaide creditors are endeavouring to have him declared a bankrupt, so that they may impound the money found in his possession when arrested, DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM. . Dunrmn, May 9, The aou of ..Captain Russell, Marine Surveyor, nine years of ago, while having some teeth extracted at Mr' Armstrong's, the chemist's, died while under chloroform. Dr Burns, it is stated, was in attendance, Late it. The teeth were bemg extracted, by Mr J. P. Armstrong, and the chloroform was administered by Dr. Burns, twenty drops being put on a bandkerjhief. The child was about ten years'old, and .had been taken to Mr Armstrong's place for the purpose of havin? four decayed teeth drawn, and these were extracted, but deceased did not recover consciousness. It being understood that deceased died during the operation from the action of the heart ceasing, Drs Alexander and Sjeuhouse were called in, but their services were of no avail, and the deceased died about half an hour after the chloroform had been administered. An inquest will probably be held before Mr Watt in the course of a day or two. Death was occasioned by paralysis of the heart, and lifo wa3 extinct within- ten minutes after the chloroform being administered in the usual way.
HEAVY WHIRLWIND AT WEST. PORT.
Westport, May 9. A whirlwind yesterday morning caused much devastation at Omvaiti-road. The verandah of Gibson's Hotel was carried ove: the building and deposited a hundred yards away. The roofing of the front rooms was also removed by the wind. The entire roof of Mr Suistetl's private house was lifted bodily and smashed ut» against an outbuilding. A portion of the material can be seen twisted amongst the branches of the trees, 400 yards distant. Fences, windown, and chimneys wore smashed; gate posts, 2ft through, drawn of the round, and large trees uprooted, No lives were lost.
FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH.
CHILD BURNT TO DEATH,
Cuuistchurck, this day. ■Yesterday evenings cottnge. .occupied by a man named Downey, at. Pebbleton, was destroyed by fire, and one of Ma daughters, 3 yearn of age, burnt to death. Downey and his wife'wore away from ;home at the time. The origin of tho fire is unknown,
