A meeting of the' Carterton Cemetery Trustees took place'on Monday evening. Present-Messrs W. Booth (chairman), Parker, Bairstow, Bowles, Smith, Moore, Calhster, Fitzgerald, and Anderson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. There was a small debit balance against the trustees, but this was pretty well covered by fees outstanding. An account of 3s was paid in favour of Messrs Pay ton and Co., a Becond of £1 4s being referred back for explanation, and the sum of £2O 7s for plans and postage was-voted to Mr Anderson. A general expression of opinion wa3 • given that the trustee and the public wore much indebted to him for his services being given. The question of the grave-digger's, account for shifting and re-interring bodies, adjourned from last meeting, was then considered, and he being present, and having explainee to the satisfaction of the trustees the way in which it was made up, it was resolved that it be forwarded to the parlies interested, with a letter from the secretary stating that in the opinion of tho trustees it was a fair and proper charge, In reply to a letter from the secretary, as to whether the grants of the sections in perpetuity were liable to stamp duty, the following letter was read :

Carterton, Bth May, 1892, E, Anderson, Esq., Carterton.

CARTERTON CEMETERY TRUST.

Dear Sir,—ln reply to your query as to the stamp duty on grants for burial plots we are of opinion that these grants are not exempt from stamp duty and bear the same duty as an ordinary conveyance of land, which duty is payable by the person purchasing the plot or plots. The duty is at the rate of 10s for every 1100 or 5s for £OO and under.

Yours truly, Leonard Wilson. For Beard & Gray. .The chairman therefore requested Messrs Smith, Parker, and Anderson, before issuing any grant, to draw the attention of the purchaser to the necessity of having it stamped. It was also resolved that those three gentlemen should assess the value of tho burial allotments in the old cemetery. Also that all arrangements with the gravedigger must be made through one or other of those gentlemen and that the Trustees could not permit outside contracts between him and other individuals. Mr Parker was authorised to make arrangements for the planting of the 200 pinus insignia presented by Mr Skey on the main road of the cemetery. The next meeting was left for the chairman to call as business might require.
