A BANK BUENT DOWN,

Early this morning a fire broke out in the preinisos lay-street occupied by T. J. Lumsden, watchmaker, ami spread to the Bank of Australasia adjoining Both places were snon burned to the ground. A considerable quantity of furniture was saved from the bank. At one time it seemed as if the premises of the Bank of New South Wales (brick), to the left of the burning building, would be destroyed, and A, Watson's brick shop on the right, separated by right of way, was also in danger. The portion nearest the Are was occupied by Peters, hairdresser, whose stock was considerably damaged by fire and water, and the Bank of New South Wales, from which furniture was removod, was also damaged. Nothing is at present known of the origin of the fi ;e. Lumsden says everything was right whon he left his shop at 10.30 last night, The building destroyed is very old, and it is understood the bank contemplated new premises shortly. The brigade was present in force, and worked well.

IMPORTANT DECISION,

Christchorch, May 8.

A case of much interest was settled at the Kaiapoi Desident Magistrate's Court this morning. Certain residents in tho village of Woodend, near Kaiapoi, have been drinking themselves to .death, and the scandal reached such a pitch that at last a resident took the matter up and applied to tho Bench at Kaiapoi to stop the supply of liquor. A clergyman in the .district supported the application, but the immediato result waß, that the Bench rather snubbed them tor their interference, The matter was persevered with, however, and to-day an application was made before Messrs 'Whitefoord, Porter, and the Mayor, to prohibit the salo of liquor to Benjamin and John Bailey (father and son) under section 167 of the Licensing Act, The application waa supported by the leading Good Templars of the district. A large amount of evidence was taken, and the order was eventually granted,
