The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Masterton Lodgo, 1.0.0.F,, M.U., was held last evening, One new member was initiated. It was resolved to celebrate the anniversary of the Lodge by a supper on the 13th June. A sum of 412 2s was voted tor the benefit of a late brother of the order, who is-now in-dis-tress at Greytowh, In connection with this the following is an extract from a letter received from the Grey town Lodge; and should prove interesting to Oddfellows :—I am directed to bring before your Lodge what appears to us to ha a very deserving case in whioh the true principles of Oddfellowship. ought to be exercised, Qnthe of April, 1842, just £0 years ago lo : day, a ship arrived in •Nelson, on board of whjch tljere were thirteen Oddfellows, who used to meet in the longboat on the ship, and afterwards in the fern in the Nelson distriofc, or more properly speaking where the eity of Nelson now stands, It is perhaps well known to you that this Lodge so started was the first in New Zealand, and from this foundation the great number of Lodges in this country-was built up. One of those thirteen members is now living in Greytown, he is in a very weak state of health anil getting very old, ; faod is at present helpless, 1 and has a bedridden wife, He has a great wish to visit his old Lodge at Nelson, and has been told by the doctor that a sea voyage would be beneficial to his health, but unfortunately he has not the means of getting .over to Nelson. .The members of tinsLodge havo.deoided to subscribe something for him, and it was suggested that the members of the other Valley Lodges might liko to assist in this very praiseworthy action. I do not think any brother, or- one. who hag taken the degrees in particular, but'must see the matter in. the light that it is 'a pleasure and psofit to assist a brother in distress. '

The Mastertou Volunteers parade at. 1 p.m. to-morrow for the purpose of attending the funeral of the late Captain Ruck. We learn from a gentleman who has just arrived in ifaaterton from Flat Point that the opinion of settlers'living in the vicinity of the Lower Whareama Ferry is that the fire ooonrredon Thursday last in the_ morning. Under the body of Mrs Smith as well as of her daughter, traces of stay fastening were found, and the raotal portions of a pair of braces were found by Smith's corpse, showing, conclusively that all the family were dressed at the time when the sad occurrence took place. _ It is supposed''"that Smith and his. wife were fishing at the river, and perceiving the whare to be _ on fire, rushed up to save their children, but were, on entering the structure, suffocated by the dense smoke. The relative positions of the various bodies favors this surmise, an<} jt js, in fact, the only intelligent' interpretation of tlje dreadful tableau that has as yet been given. .

MVo aw often asked why Ripr & Hare give the highest price for butter and eggs and yet soil these "autocrats of the breakfast table" at a iheaper rate than any other house in the town. The question is easily answered, they are satisfied with only one profit; that is the grand secret! [Apvt,!
